Artikkelissa tunnistan toiseuttavan verkkokeskustelun erilaisia muotoja anonyymeistä, suomenkielisistä verkkokeskustelukulttuureista. Aineistona on kolmelta eri keskustelualustalta – Tumblrista, Redditistä ja Ylilaudalta kerätyt keskusteluaineistot, joista tarkastelen ryhmäytymisen sekä ulossulkemisen keinoja toiseuttavan verkkokeskustelun teorian avulla. Toiseuttava verkkokeskustelu on verkkovuorovaikutuksessa esiintyvää arvottavaa puhetta identiteeteistä, ihmisistä ja ryhmistä. Toiseuttavan verkkokeskustelun teoria taas on tapa hahmottaa tällaista puhetta sen erilaisten ominaisuuksien ja ympäröivien kontekstien avulla. Artikkelissa analysoidut keskustelualustat ja niiden sisällä ylläpidetyt keskustelukulttuurit poikkeavat toisistaan monilta osin ja artikkelin tavoitteena onkin vertailla, miten ulos sulkeva dynamiikka ilmenee eri tavoin ja miten se toisaalta ottaa samanlaisia muotoja keskenään hyvin erilaisissa keskustelukulttuureissa. Havainnoiduissa verkkokeskustelukulttuureissa toistuivat erityisesti huumoriin, epäilykseen, valta-asemaan, arvoihin ja kansallisidentiteettiin pohjaavat toiseuttavan verkkokeskustelun muodot sekä vertaistuellinen toiseuttaminen. Kullakin keskustelukulttuurilla on myös niille ominaisia toiseuttamisen muotoja.
The growth of online communities and social media has led to a growing need for methods, concepts, and tools for researching online cultures. Particular attention should be paid to polarizing online discussion cultures and dynamics that increase inequality in online environments. Social media has enormous potential to create good, but in order to unlock its full potential, we also need to examine the mechanisms keeping these spaces monotonous, homogenous, and even hostile toward some groups. With this need in mind, I have developed the concept and theory of othering online discourse (OOD).This chapter introduces and defines the concept of OOD and explains the key characteristics and different attributes of OOD in relation to other concepts that deal with disruptive and discriminatory behavior in online spaces. The attributes of OOD are demonstrated drawing on examples gathered from the Finnish Suomi24 (Finland24) forum.
Verkon vihapuhe on yksi teknologiavälitteisen väkivallan muoto. Sen vaikutukset ovat harvoin välittömiä tai fyysisiä, vaan enemmänkin toiston kautta voimistuvia. Siksi verkon vihapuhekaan ei ole ”vain puhetta”. Sosiaalisella medialla on arjessamme alati kasvava vaikutus. Siksi myös identiteettimme hahmottuvat yhä enemmän verkossa muodostuvien yhteisöllisyyksien kautta.Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen tällaista vihamielisyyteen sekä erityisesti väkivaltaisiin sisältöihin kytkeytyvää yhteisöllisyyttä toiseuttavan verkkokeskustelun käsitteen avulla. Tapausesimerkkinä käytän kuvafoorumi Ylilautaa, jonka anonyymin keskustelukulttuurin ongelmia on käsitelty laajasti sekä suomalaisessa julkisessa keskustelussa että akateemisessa kontekstissa. Tavoitteeni on selvittää, millaisia väkivaltaisen toiseuttavan verkkokeskustelun muotoja Ylilaudan pidäkkeettömäksi tunnustetulta Satunnainen-keskustelualueelta on tunnistettavissa ja millaiseksi toiseuden tuottajan ja ”Toisen” suhde näissä vuorovaikutustilanteissa rakentuu. Millaisia merkityksiä väkivallan kuvauksilla on toiseuden tuottamisen kannalta?Väkivaltainen toiseuttava verkkokeskustelu on Ylilaudan kontekstissa jäsennettävissä kohtaamisen ja ulossulkemisen kautta. Kohtaavan, väkivaltaisen toiseuttamisen keinoin käyttäjät tunnustavat toiseuttamisen kohteen läsnäolon keskustelussa. Ulossulkeva, väkivaltainen toiseuttaminen on keino kuvailla yhteisöstä ulkopuoliseksi hahmotettua Toista. Väkivaltainen toiseuttava verkkokeskustelu on keino reagoida yhteisön sisällä ilmaistuun ei-toivottuun käytökseen sekä tapa määrittää ja kuvailla identiteettejä, jotka nähdään yhteisöstä käsin ulkopuolisina.Avainsanat: verkkokeskustelu, verkkoyhteisöt, toiseus, toiseuttaminen, Ylilauta, verkkoväkivalta“Get in the oven” – Violent and othering online discourseDiscursive online hate is a form of technology-facilitated violence. Its effects are rarely immediate or physical, but the impact of hostile, violent online content is often amplified through repetition. That is why online hate speech should not be dismissed as “mere talk”. With the growing influence of social media, our identities are increasingly taking shape in online communities. In this article, I explore online communality and violent content by applying the concept of ‘othering online discourse’. As a case study, I use the Finnish image board Ylilauta, whose problematic discussion culture has been widely discussed both in Finnish public discourse and in the academic context. My aim is to find out what forms of violent and othering online discourse can be identified in Ylilauta’s infamously unrestrained Satunnainen discussion area, and what is the interaction like between the producers of otherness and the “Other” within these othering discourses. What kinds of meanings do descriptions of violence have in terms of producing otherness?Violent and othering online discourse expressed on Ylilauta can be divided into two main categories: confronting practices of othering and excluding practices of othering. By means of confronting and violent othering, users acknowledge the presence of the Other. Excluding, violent othering is a way to describe Others that are perceived as outsiders. Violent, othering online discourse is a way of reacting to unwanted behavior within a community and a way of defining and describing individuals and groups of people that are seen as outsiders. Keywords: online discourse, online communities, otherness, othering, Ylilauta, online violence
