Transforming multi-dimensional datasets, containing measurements of different physical parameters recorded at the same location, into a single composite imagery is quite important and frequently used in geophysical analysis as well as other scientific disciplines. This study focuses on the application of several different integration approaches for archaeo-geophysical data with a purpose of achieving complementary and improved information about the buried archaeological target by generating a single data set from multiple geophysical methods. An extensive geophysical survey using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and differential magnetic methods was made in different parts of the Aizanoi archaeological site (Cavdarhisar, Kutahya, Turkey) to locate and enhance subsurface archaeological structures. However, in this article, the outputs of graphical, mathematical and statistical integration approaches, which are applied both on synthetic images and real field case data, are presented and discussed. Comparing these results and experimental applications, mathematical and statistical integration approaches provide more useful and practicable information than just the single distinct datasets from each geophysical parameter studied.
The typological studies of Lycian tombs began in the eighteenth century. Although these pioneer typologies were not satisfactory, studies continued in subsequent years. Akurgal divided them into three groups and put all the Lycian sarcophagi in the second group in his typology. But he does not distinguish the differences between these sarcophagi. In addition, the second group is also termed: 'The Monuments of Tombs in the Tradition of Native Anatolia''. This terminology contradicts the characteristics of these sarcophagi, as Lycian sarcophagi reflect not only native Anatolian traditions; but also influences from Greek, Persian and Roman art. In the 1970's, Borchhardt created a new typology that was more detailed. Subsequently Atila, İdil and İskan-Yılmaz attempted new typologies. This study is a continuation from these typologies. In this typology study, before all else the attempt was made to understand the sarcophagi in Lycia during the problematic Hellenistic and Roman periods. From my previous studies elsewhere in Lycia, these sarcophagi can be divided into 5 distinct types.
This paper aims to analyse the relationship between the Lycian League and Olympus in Eastern Lycia. One of the six cities with three votes in the Lycian League, Olympus was no longer a member of the League after the pirate chief Zenicetes captured the city. Olympus issued Lycian League coins until it left the League, when it began to mint coins termed today Pseudo-League coins. These coins seem to have been struck from the end the II century B.C. and continued to be minted until 77 B.C. Although they imitated League examples, they do not carry the name of the federation. Olympus was probably struck from the League because of its capture by Zenicetes or because of its collaboration with the pirates. Olympus coined as a member of the League in the II century B.C. but it could not be determined exactly when the city became a member of the Lycian League. Olympus and Phaselis minted Lycian League type coins in Period II, Series 1 with issues dating from 167 to 130 B.C. At the end of the 1970's a hoard containing 133 League coins was discovered, probably in Kemer. Of these coins 91, are from Eastern Lycia, with 76 from Olympus and Phaselis and 15 from Limyra, Rhodiapolis and Gagai. There are also 58 Olympus League coins.
ÖzetBu makalede Kütahya İli'nin 57 km güneybatısında, Çavdarhisar İlçe'sinde konumlanan Aizanoi antik kentindeki Zeus tapınağı, stadion-tiyatro kompleksi, macellum alanı ve mozaikli hamam ile çevresi ele alınarak; tarihsel süreçte söz konusu yapılar ve bulundukları alanın tahribi-müdahale ve fonksiyonlarının değişimi değerlendirilecektir. AbstractThis paper examines the Zeus temple, the complex of stadion-theatre, macellum area and the mosaic bath erected and built in Aizanoi ancient city located in the inner western Anatolia region, 54 km southwest of Kutahya Province, and within the present boundaries of the district Cavdarhisar. It aims to analyse the destruction and transformation of these ancient buildings' functions during the historical period in Aizanoi.
Bat~~ nekropolü, Kav~uk Bo~az~'mn giineyinden ba~lay~p, Çay'm güney yaka-s~nda biti~ik nizarr~b mezarlarla tiyatroya kadar devam eden alan~~ kapsamaktad~r Bu alanda toplam 155 tonozlu mezar tespit edilmi~tir. * Prof. Dr., Pamukkale Oni.
