Bireylerin artan istek ve ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak amacıyla çeşitli ödeme araçlarına ihtiyaç duyulması kartlı ödeme sistemleri sektörünün ortaya çıkmasına ve hızla büyümesine katkı sağlamış, ödeme araçları içinde en fazla büyüme kredi kartı piyasasında görülmüştür. Kredi kartlarını bu kadar geniş kitlelerin tercih etmesi bilinçsiz tüketim ve aşırı kart kullanımı riskini de beraberinde getirmiştir. Bilinçsizce yapılan kredi kartı kullanımı özellikle gençler ve yetişkinler arasında büyük bir sorun halini almıştır. Kişinin aylık gelirinden daha fazlasını harcamasına sebep olan kredi kartları öğrencilerde sürekli devam eden ve bir türlü kurtulamadıkları bir borçluluk döngüsü yarattığı için, bu çemberin içinde kaybolan öğrenciler çeşitli psikolojik rahatsızlıklarla karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Bu çalışma ile özellikle üniversite öğrencileri arasında hızla yayılan kredi kartı kullanımını etkileyen faktörler ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi’nin farklı fakültelerinde okuyan 1143 öğrenciye anket uygulanmış; kompülsif satın alma, finansal refah düzeyi ve borca karşı tutumun kredi kartı kullanımıyla ilişkisi analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Analiz sonucunda kompülsif satın almanın kredi kartı kullanımını etkilediği, kredi kartı kullanımının ise hem finansal refah üzerinde hem de borca karşı tutum üzerinde etkisi olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu bulgulara ek olarak borca karşı tutumun finansal refah düzeyini etkilediği görülmüştür.
