This paper considers the problem of national versus international journals. The practice in certain countries of giving 'recognition' only to Science Citation Index journals, per se, does a disservice to national journals. These journals serve an important role in local diffusion of applied information. Sixty papers were studied: half published in a local Spanish journal and the other half in international journals. They were written by the same groups of researchers. Indicators designed to discriminate the type of research published in both sets were used. The analysis indicated that the type of research published in the Spanish journals is applied, whereas that published abroad is basic. Apparently, the Spanish journal is nearer to the industrial sector. However, to disregard the local journal for evalua-tive purposes may be a disservice to scientists who are trying to help in the transfer of information to the industrial sector.
Analysis of scientific production is made in the domains of vaccines for the period 1990-1995, including eight Iberian-American countries. To attain the results, different indicators were applied such as: collaboration rate, activity index and representation techniques, using a cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. Similarities between countries are represented according to their activity index in the subject field. Results show a discontinuity in the scientific production over the years, where each country has a peculiar behavior.
Abstract:Interdisciplinarity is one of the most relevant aspects in the process of knowledge production today, for the synergies it affords between the various fields of science to enhance the efficiency of research. The methods for ascertaining such interdisciplinarity range from the most traditional sociological approaches to the deployment of bibliometric indicators. Bibliometric methods have been used to study and analyse scientific activity of the Department of Chemistry of University of Puerto Rico as a whole, but the present study addresses a series of questions relating specifically to interdisciplinarity among research chemists, by studying the subjects covered in the journals where their papers are published and the bibliographic references consulted. The information used was taken from the Science Citation Index (SCI) database, which includes the most significant contributions made by these scientists. Other aspects analysed were the relationships observed between interdisciplinary research and collaboration among scientists or between the interdisciplinarity and the impact or visibility of papers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
