The aim of this work was to evaluate the prevalence of amoebiasis, caused by Entamoeba histolytica (Schaudinn, 1903) u. Lig a serologic test and to determine which risk factors affect the transmission of the pathogen and to investigate a putative relationship between the detection of the antigen in the serum and, on the other side serum pH, serum cholesterol level and the presence of intestinal helminths.Specific Entamoeba histolytica antibodies were detected in both areas such evidence o f parasitism in Vila da Barca, PA was present in 25.8 % of the population studi ed whereas the prevalence in Jardim Roriz, DF was only 11.4% (p < 0.05).The follow ing features evaluated w ere considered full risk factors associated with the high prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica in the Vila da Barca village: high air relative humidity; marked wetness o f the soil below the houses; poor socioeconomic status; absence of sanitation in the area; inadequate potable water supply; poor domestic hygiene; family crowding; various sexual partners; high frequency of malnutrition; a lower number of obese and over weight subjects; alcoolism and drug use.The faecal pH in the Vila da Barca, PA was often alkaline in the total population evaluated and in people that had circulating antigen to Entamoeba histolytica in the serum. The following factors such as the drinking water pH, intestinal microflora and 49
