Background: Anaemia in pregnancy is an indirect cause of maternal mortality. Myriad of factors predispose pregnant women to anaemia in pregnancy in the developing countries of the world of which poverty, illiteracy and ignorance are central. The prevalence of anaemia in the developing countries of the world is between 32% and 62.2%. Objective: To determine the prevalence of anaemia amongst antenatal clinic attendees in Ogoni, South-South Nigeria and offer preventive measures. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective four months cross-sectional study of antenatal clinic attendees at booking in three (3) primary health care facilities and general hospitals Bori and Tera, in Ogoni, South-South Nigeria. Three hundred and eighty (380) pregnant women’s biodata including their packed cell volume were collected. These pieces of information were computed using a structured proforma. The data were coded and analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software version 25. Results: The mean age of the study antenatal clinic attendees was 28 years. The mean gestational age at booking was 25weeks. The range for the packed cell volume was 25% to 36% and the mean packed cell volume at booking was 30%. Three hundred and eighteen (318) (84.0%) had anaemia (with packed cell volume less than 33%). Majority of patients 249 (65.6%) had mild anaemia There was none with severe anaemia. Majority of patients had secondary level of education represented by 275 (72.3%). Conclusion: The prevalence of anaemia amongst antenatal clinic attendees at Ogoni was 84.0%. The role of pre-pregnancy care amongst women desirous of pregnancy, familly planning and the role of education cannot be over emphasized in the prevention of anaemia in pregnancy.

The significance of determining the distribution of blood group of patients prior to surgical procedures cannot be over-emphasized. This is because surgical patients may need blood transfusion pre-operatively, intra-operatively or post-operatively. The distribution of ABO blood group varies in different regions of the world. Aim: To determine the distribution of ABO blood group in surgical patients at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH). Method: This was a one-year retrospective study of Surgical patients (Surgery and Obstetrics/Gynaecology departments) of the RSUTH. The patients comprised of all the consecutive cases of the surgeries in these departments for the period under review. Ethical clearance was obtained from ethical committee of the Rivers State Hospital Management Board. Structured profoma was used to extract information from patients’ case notes and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Result: A total of 370 patients were attended to pre-operatively. There were 146 (39.5%) males and 224 (60.5%) females. The mean age was 31 years. The age range was 22 years to 56 years. One hundred and ninety four (52.4%) were obstetrics and gynaecological surgeries while 176 (47.6 %) were non-gynaecological surgeries. The commonest indication for surgery was caesarean representing 126 (34.1%) of the subject. The distribution of blood was as follows O 233 (63.0%), A 66 (17.8%), B 56 (15.1%), AB 15 (4.1%). Sex distribution of blood group O comprised of 140 (37.9%) females had blood O while 93 (25.1%) were males. Conclusion: Our study revealed the most prevalent blood group in surgical patients as blood group as O (63.0%) and the least prevalent blood group was blood group AB. The prime reason for ascertaining blood group especially in surgical patients is for transfusion of compatible blood when the need arises.

Background: Post-operative anaemia is often a reflection of pre-operative pre-operative work-up and pre-operative anaemia. In addition. Post-operative anaemia is also determined by co-morbidities of patients prior to surgery. The prevalence of post-operative anaemia varies based on surgical specialties and the experience of the surgeon; prevalence rates as high as 85% have been recorded in orthopaedic surgeries. Aim: To determine the prevalence of post-operative anaemic in surgical patients at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH). Method: This was a six months cross sectional study of the post-operative anaemia of patients who had operation at the Surgery and Obstetrics/Gyaecology departments of The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. The permission for the study was granted by the head of department of obstetrics and gynaecology in conjunction with the head of .the hospital management. The yard stick for anaemia was packed cell volume less than 33% in line with the World Health Organization (WHO). A structured proforma was used to obtain information from patient’s case notes and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Result: Three hundred and eigthy subjects were recruited for the study. Males subjects were 150 (39.5%) while females were 230 (60.5%) respectively. The mean age was 31 years. One hundred and ninety nine (52.4%) were obstetrics and gynaecological surgeries while 181 (47.6 %) were non-gynaecological surgeries. The commonest indication for surgery was caesarean section representing 130 (34.2%) of the subjects. Two hundred and sixty six of the subjects (70%) had PCV less than 33%. One hundred and fifty two (40%) women had PCV less than 33% while 114 (30%) of the men had PCV less than 33%. Conclusion: The study revealed that prevalence of post-operative anaemia amongst surgical patients at RSUTH was 70 %. The post-operative anaemia amongst women was worrisome. The need to optimize patients prior to surgery cannot be over-emphasized to prevent morbidities and mortalities post-operative.
