Der Zweck der vorliegenden Untersuchungen war, Vorkommen und Hiiufigkeit der avirulenten, im fibrigcn abet typischen Diphtheriebazillen in ' unserem Untersuehungsgebiete zu studieren und, wenn mSglich, zur LSsung der Frage nach der epidemiologischen Bedeutung derselbea beizutragen. Im folgenden soll hauptsiichlich fiber das Material berichtet werden, welches wir in einigen grSl~eren geschlossenen Anstalten unter Kindern verschiedenen Alters sammeln konnten. Die Frage nach der Rolle, welche den avirulenten Bazillen in der Epidemiologie der Diphtherie zukomm~, war yon jeher das Hauptproblem der Diphtherieforschung. Leider hat die bald zu enge, bald sehr weite Fassung, welche tier Begriff der sogenannten Pseudodiphtheriebazillen erhielt, die Klfirung dieser Frage lange aufgehalten und dazu geffihrt, dab yon einzelnen Untersuchern recht verschiedene Ansiehten tiber die Bedeutung des Diphtheriebacillus und seinet Abarten verfochten wurden. Erst die eingehende Untersuchung der kulturellen und biologischen Eigenschaften tier hier in Betracht kommenden Mikroorganismen, welche wir namen*~lich Neisser verdanken, hat uns in den Stand gesetzt, einzelne Typen scharf voneinander abzugrenzen. u allem scheint es ein wesent-]icher Gewinn tier ]etzten Jahre, dab der Begriff des typischen Diphtheriebacillus auf einige konstante Kulturmerkmale begrtindet wurde, und die Toxinbildung nicht als unerl~Bliche Eigenschaft desselben angesehen ~vird.
