L'Archeologia del mediterraneo ha spostato solo di recente la propria attenzione sull'entroterra e l'Archeologia delle montagne mediterranee è ancora un terreno ampiamente inesplorato. Nonostante l'apparente mitezza, infatti, questo tipo di paesaggio pone delle sfide che hanno contribuito a creare, nei secoli, fenomeni culturali unici nel loro genere e difficilmente inquadrabili in modelli culturali concepiti sulla base di territori meno frammentari e morfologicamente complessi. In questo articolo, attraverso il caso studio dell'Abruzzo settentrionale, ci si propone di osservare da vicino la risposta dei popoli pre-romani dell'Appennino centrale alle sfide poste da un paesaggio povero di risorse e spesso inospitale. L'attitudine a cambiamenti lenti e spesso solo apparenti sarà contestualizzata alla luce di un'interpretazione teorica che combini Archeologia e Antropologia.
