Milagre é o mesmo que miracle? Essa pergunta aparentemente absurda é o pesadelo do tradutor, o resumo de todas as impotências, e nela se concentra o mistério da (in)traduzibilidade. Clarice Lispector converteu-a em temível e poética realidade em uma crônica publicada em 12 de dezembro de 1970 no Jornal do Brasil, intitulada "Palavras apenas fisicamente": Na Itália il miracolo é de pesca noturna. Mortalmente ferido pelo arpão larga no mar sua tinta roxa. Quem o pesca, desembarca antes de o sol nascersabendo com o rosto lívido e responsável que arrasta pelas areias o enorme peso da pesca milagrosa: il miracolo amore. Milagre é lágrima caindo na folha, treme, desliza, tomba: eis milhares de milágrimas brilhando na relva. The miracle tem duras pontas de estrela e muita prata farpada. Le miracle é um octógono de cristal que se pode girar lentamente na palma da mão. Ele está na mão, mas é de se olhar. Pode-se vê-lo de todos os lados, bem devagar, e de cada lado é o octógono de cristal. Até que de repentearriscando o corpo e já toda pálida de sentido-a pessoa entende: na própria mão aberta não está um octógono mas le miracle. Si las primeras europeas en América, salvo contadísimas excepciones, son un magma anónimo, sin espacio ni voz propia, cómo iba a ser mejor el destino y la situación de esas mujeres dos veces invisibles. Para intentar vislumbrar algo entre tanto velo, y aunque es premisa esencial para no repetir el equívoco de los indigenistas del siglo XIX y de los primeros etnólogos recordar que el “indio” como universal no existe y la “india” tampoco, debemos tener en cuenta que las representaciones de la mujer india del Brasil en los siglos XVI y XVII, especialmente las gráficas, se acercan mucho más a la representación de un universal que a una verdadera imagen individual.
