In this brief report we present an overview of the MultiLing 2017 effort and workshop, as implemented within EACL 2017. MultiLing is a community-driven initiative that pushes the state-of-the-art in Automatic Summarization by providing data sets and fostering further research and development of summarization systems. This year the scope of the workshop was widened, bringing together researchers that work on summarization across sources, languages and genres. We summarize the main tasks planned and implemented this year, also providing insights on next steps.

Developing artificial learning systems that can understand and generate natural language has been one of the long-standing goals of artificial intelligence. Recent decades have witnessed an impressive progress on both of these problems, giving rise to a new family of approaches. Especially, the advances in deep learning over the past couple of years have led to neural approaches to natural language generation (NLG). These methods combine generative language learning techniques with neural-networks based frameworks. With a wide range of applications in natural language processing, neural NLG (NNLG) is a new and fast growing field of research. In this state-of-the-art report, we investigate the recent developments and applications of NNLG in its full extent from a multidimensional view, covering critical perspectives such as multimodality, multilinguality, controllability and learning strategies. We summarize the fundamental building blocks of NNLG approaches from these aspects and provide detailed reviews of commonly used preprocessing steps and basic neural architectures. This report also focuses on the seminal applications of these NNLG models such as machine translation, description generation, automatic speech recognition, abstractive summarization, text simplification, question answering and generation, and dialogue generation. Finally, we conclude with a thorough discussion of the described frameworks by pointing out some open research directions.

This paper presents an overview of our participation in the TAC 2008 Opinion Pilot Summarization task, as well as the proposed and evaluated post-competition improvements. We first describe our opinion summarization system and the results obtained. Further on, we identify the system's weak points and suggest several improvements, focused both on information content, as well as linguistic and readability aspects. We obtain encouraging results, especially as far as Fmeasure is concerned, outperforming the competition results by approximately 80%.

This paper reports on the further results of the ongoing research analyzing the impact of a range of commonly used statistical and semantic features in the context of extractive text summarization. The features experimented with include word frequency, inverse sentence and term frequencies, stopwords filtering, word senses, resolved anaphora and textual entailment. The obtained results demonstrate the relative importance of each feature and the limitations of the tools available. It has been shown that the inverse sentence frequency combined with the term frequency yields almost the same results as the latter combined with stopwords filtering that in its turn proved to be a highly competitive baseline. To improve the suboptimal results of anaphora resolution, the system was extended with the second anaphora resolution module. The present paper also describes the first attempts of the internal document data representation.
