Ecological issues make the significant stream in RNPLS&T’s activities. In 2009, the Ecological E-library was established. At present, the E-library comprises 22 collections of over 800 books, journals and serials in the rare publications collections of RNPLS&T and partner organizations. The collections are being published on DVDs and are also available on open access on the Library’s ecological webpage. The project goal is to acquire an accessible full-text resource in the RF nature management built on science literature of the 18th-early 20th centuries. The resource is being enriched with new special collections. For this purpose, Ecology and Sustainable Development Projects Group has implemented the algorithm for special collection development encompassing content selection and assessment, digitization of publications and publishing the digital periodical registered by Informregistr Sci-tech Center. After the collection is loaded online, the Group is to promote it through issuing methodological guide on how to use the collection in ecological education. The article is prepared within the framework of the State Order № 075-01300-20-00.
Among the other IFLA sections and thematic groups, IFLA Environment, Sustainability and Libraries Section (ENSULIB) is in the thick of sustainability problems and, in particular, of ecological component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). ENSULIB encourages the libraries to inspire their communities for the ecologically sustainable course of action through providing materials on “green” librarianship, giving the floor to “green” librarians and library projects, by taking the lead and propounding the discussion. On IFLA ENSULIB web page, one can find materials and projects for the libraries working in ecological education and advocating sustainability ideas, and among these initiatives are IFLA Green Library Award, news bulletin, open access thematic information resource, Library Map of the World Project, and regular webinars. The ENSULIB provides support to zero-waste and decrease-ofconsumption projects. The authors discuss the materials that might be useful for Russian libraries.
Building the single logic of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) is important for their implementation, and the library educational work contributes to this task. To accomplish it, the libraries have to interact with government and public agencies, mass media, business, etc. The author explores the terms used in planning, discussing and evaluating organizational efforts in ecology. The integrated approach to terminology lays the foundation for the vector of green libraries and green activities to become the new normality for all libraries.
The concepts of green library, green librarianship, and sustainable libraries have become popular in the library community and have been intensively examined in the publications and materials on the webpage of IFLA Environment, Sustainability and Libraries Section (further ENSULIB). Since 2016, the contest IFLA Green Library Award has been held. The Award materials make the valuable source of information and inspiration for the libraries. The author attempts to systematize the approaches to establishing green libraries and to draw attention on the most interesting winner projects and ideas.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
