A landslide suceptibility zonation was performed in a 10 km wide corridor along the RECOPE pipeline between the cites of Siquirres and Turrialba. The total study area is 330 km². Analysis was based on aerial photointerpretation, bibliographic research and the application of the Mora-Vahrson method (Mora et al., 1992), in which slope was used instead of the internal relief parameter. A landslide inventory map was included in the evaluation of the lithological suceptibility parameter. Zonation resulted in a predominance of areas with low landslide susceptibility (33,9%), mostly located where Tuis Formation is present, south east of the study area, followed by Suretka Formation and partially Andesitas Poás. Keywords: susceptibility, landslides, pipeline, Siquirres, Turrialba, RECOPE, Mora-Vahrson.
ABSTRACT: Turrialba City has been frequently affected by flash floods of Colorado River, Gamboa Stream and tributaries. These events are caused by the combination of meteorological conditions, geomorphological factors and the uncontrolled urban expansion along these rivers. A geomorphological description of the study area is provided, mainly on the basis of photo-interpretation and field observations. Subsequently, a different degree of flood hazard is assigned to each geomorphological unit, depending on their physical characteristics, on the existing urban features and large scale topographic elements, and on the occurrence and behaviour of similar events in the past. In this way it is demonstrated that Turrialba City is located in an area with high to medium flood hazard. Finally, the riverbank erosion problem is described.
abstract:The present study identifies the hydrochemical and isotopic properties of 11 springs, including one thermal spring, in Tulian watershed, located in the city of Puerto Cortés, Cortés, Honduras. The relation between the concentrations of the environmental stable isotopes deuterium ( 2 H) and oxygen -18 ( 18 O) in the water is similar to the relation in global meteoric water, indicating that the water has a meteoric origin. Evaluation of the geochemical characteristics of the water reveals that these springs belong to the same hydrogeological system, which comprises a fractured schist and gneiss of the Esquistos Cacaguapa formation. The water of the evaluated springs is mainly Na -Ca -HCO 3 . The δ 2 H (‰) and δ 2 H contents indicate that there is no variation in the ‰ value.
ABSTRACT:A landslide inventory and a detailed geomorphological analysis were done, focusing on the identification of mass movement related morphologies, and with the purpose of making a preliminary landslide susceptibility analysis of the Viejo river basin, Puriscal. From a geomorphological point of view, denudational units are predominant. They include regions severely affected by mass movements and represent 92,3% of the basin area. Geomorphology proved to be an important conditioning factor for landslide susceptibility and a valuable instrument for the interpretation of historical dynamics of the geoforms and past landslide events, with the aim of validating the variables and methodologies of susceptibility zonation to be considered. Keywords: inventory, zonation, susceptibility, landslide, drainage, geomorphology, Viejo river, Puriscal.

Suitable areas for the development of large scale landfill sites are defined, in order to help municipalities in coping with waste management problematic. The analysis is focused in an area located between Grande and Grande de Tárcoles rivers and Jesús María river, due to geological, economical and geographical reasons. Basic outlines are established to rule the suitability determination, considering distance to protected areas, rivers, access routes and towns, as well as topography, geology, hydrogeology, real estate conditions and land use regulations, among others. A preliminary site selection is carried out using GIS, combining binary factor maps with overlay functions. Three suitable sites larger than 50 ha are proposed, from which Vuelta Coyoles site, in Concepción, Atenas, shows better physical conditions and economical feasibility.
