In the rabbit experimental model, carbapenems were shown to be effective in the treatment of intra-abdominal infection due to an extended-spectrum β-lactamase-negative carbapenem-susceptible VIM-1-producing clinical E. coli strain, but treatment with aztreonam resulted in a more favourable outcome overall.
We present a 72-year-old female patient complaining of pain and distention of the abdomen, nausea and vomiting. No history of previous abdominal surgery, hernias or biliary disease was present. Plain abdominal x-rays showed small bowel obstruction. This mechanical obstruction of the gastrointestinal truct was caused by a gallstone in the terminal ileum.
Graffiti as an urban phenomenon comes in different forms and materials, from simple spray slogans to wall paintings and art, containing multi-thematic content. Despite the contradictory nature of various literature opinions, reports of a positive association between wall-graffiti and fear of crime or streetscape value have emerged. However, comparative urban studies registering graffiti locations are non-existent, thereby hindering the benchmarking of urban liveability. In this work, the spatial patterns of graffiti-vandalism across 30 European city centres were investigated, using Google Street View–derived observations. A significant variation in graffiti presence across Europe was recorded, ranging from about 3%–9% of street segments in London, Oslo and Vienna, to roughly 70%–76% in Madrid, Athens and Sofia. In addition, their spatial polarisation that reflects the presence of potential socio-spatial inequities requiring further attention was demonstrated. Overall, the created geo-visualisations could enable European policymakers to facilitate better-informed response strategies and researchers to delve into the effects of graffities on urban systems and societies.
Schistosomiasis is a major parasitic infection of tropical areas. We present a 26-year-old male immigrant from Egypt with acute abdomen due to schistosomial infection, mimicking symptoms of acute appendicitis, with histopathological detection and representation of schistosomial eggs in the unusual area of the greater omentum. This is a rare case with findings of intra-peritoneal schistosoma ova. We review the pertinent literature and indicate the need for a new approach to infectious diseases with unusual clinical presentation, due to pathogens coming from distal geographical regions, in which surgeons must keep a high index of suspicion.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
