Este artigo é um estudo de caso constituído a partir de documentos oficiais e notícias de jornais que resgata a trajetória do Instituto Paulista de Pesquisas sobre Câncer (IPPC), uma das primeiras iniciativas da sociedade civil a integrar estudos experimentais sobre o câncer e atendimento médico gratuito em São Paulo na década de 1950. Chefiado por Jorge Erdelyi, um eletrotécnico distante dos consensos e das autoridades da cancerologia, o Instituto gerou resistência de oncologistas, em especial os da Associação Paulista de Combate ao Câncer (APCC), que disputavam os recursos econômicos e o capital simbólico da luta contra o câncer em São Paulo. O insucesso da empreitada institucional do IPPC não está associado com o número de atendimentos ou com as pesquisas desenvolvidas em seus laboratórios, mas à incapacidade de seu dirigente para ascender por dentro, como especialista, ou por fora, como outsider, na própria cancerologia.
Não há um consenso a respeito da relação entre os conceitos de Letramento e História nas práticas de ensino. Queremos somar a esse debate a práxis em uma escola hospitalar, visando compreender como a relação entre ambas as noções atende aos propósitos e necessidades específicas de alunos em tratamento de neoplasias. Justificamos esse estudo a partir do dever ético em se manter o respeito e solidariedade com relação ao momento pedagógico do aluno gravemente enfermo, bem como da necessidade de se instrumentalizar o professor de História para lidar com as peculiaridades da escola hospitalar. Concluímos que o Letramento em História no Atendimento Escolar Hospitalar apresenta-se como um instrumento que permite uma abordagem abrangente sobre o conteúdo das Ciências Humanas, sem perder a especificidade do conhecimento histórico, contribuindo de maneira eficaz para o direito à educação do aluno gravemente enfermo.
