O artigo analisa a crítica empreendida por Fernando de Azevedo (1894-1974) acerca da Escola Tradicional. A discussão suscitada pelo autor propunha a reconstrução da educação pública brasileira sob o clima de renovação política e social trazido pela Revolução de 1930, incorporado pelo movimento escolanovista na década de 1920. Para a realização deste estudo, foram utilizados como fonte livros escritos pelo autor e o Manifesto dos Pioneiros da Educação Nova de 1932. O texto encontra-se organizado em três momentos. Primeiramente, trata sobre os aspectos históricos e sociais da época. Na sequência, analisa a trajetória de vida de Fernando de Azevedo, sua teoria e sua concepção de educação. Por último, a análise se concentra no Manifesto de 1932. O estudo permitiu compreender que Azevedo possuía um projeto para a educação brasileira, a qual buscava reformar concomitantemente às transformações sociais e dirigindo-as ao mesmo sentido. Nesse processo, a educação desempenhava um importante papel e, por essa razão, não poderia ser isolada do conjunto das transformações necessárias ao país.
