Bu araştırmanın amacı, “Basit Makineler” ünitesi kapsamında Mühendislik Tasarım Süreci (MTS) kullanılarak geliştirilmiş olan STEM etkinliklerinin sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerin konuları anlamalarına ve bilimsel süreç becerilerine etkisini ortaya koymaktır. Araştırma, karma yöntem kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılında Giresun iline bağlı olan bir köy okulunun sekizinci sınıfında öğrenim gören toplam 11 öğrenci (Nerkek=6, Nkız=5) oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada deney grubuna “Basit Makineler” ünitesi kapsamında MTS aşamaları dikkate alınarak geliştirilen STEM etkinlikleri uygulanmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak 16 sorudan ve iki aşamadan oluşan “İki Aşamalı Basit Makine Testi (İABMT)”, Bilimsel Süreç Beceri Testi (BSBT) ve konu kavramları ve öğretim uygulamaları ile ilgili yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilere, ön test ve son test olarak uygulanan İABMT ve BSBT’den elde edilen veriler SPSS programı ile analiz edilerek karşılaştırılmıştır. Uygulama sonrası öğrencilerle “Basit Makineler” konusundaki kavramlar ve öğretim uygulamaları hakkındaki yarı yapılandırılmış mülakatlardan elde edilen veriler ise içerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Bu araştırmada MTS odaklı STEM etkinliklerinin öğrencilerin “Basit makineler” konusuyla ilgili kavramları anlamalarında anlamlı bir artış sağladığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ancak MTS odaklı STEM etkinlikleri öğrencilerin bilimsel süreç becerilerini geliştirmede bir miktar artış sağlasa da bu artışın istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmadığı ortaya koyulmuştur. Buna ek olarak öğrenciler süreçte her ne kadar zorlandıklarını belirtmiş olsalar da bütün süreç düşünüldüğünde uyumlu çalışma, etkili iletişim, sosyal beceri, yeni fikir geliştirme, sorumluluk, problem çözme, karar verme ve zorlukların üstesinden gelme gibi birçok yönlerini geliştirmelerine fırsat yakaladıkları söylenilebilir.
