The study examines the relationship between bank specific and macroeconomic determinant of non-performing loans in Nigerian deposit money banks over the period of 5 years (2010 to 2014). A sample of 10 banks out of 15 quoted by the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) was considered on a cross sectional basis. The study adopted non-survey research design and secondary data was used, generated from the bank's annual reports and accounts, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigerian Stock Exchange fact book respectively. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient and multiple regressions. As thus, Stata (version 12) was used as a statistical tool for data analysis. The findings reveal positive significant relationship between Non-Performing loans and Loan to deposit and Bank size; whereas relationship between capital adequacy ratio and Inflation reveals a positive insignificant relationship; whereas Return on asset had negative insignificant relationship with the rate of non-performing loans. Based on the findings, it is recommended that CBN for policy purposes should frequently assess the lending habit of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Finally, strengthening securities market will have a positive impact on the general improvement of the banking institutes' thereby increasing the effectiveness of the financial sector.

The central thrust of this study is to examine the effect of board size, board composition and board Meetings on the financial performance of listed consumer goods in Nigeria over the period of ten years from 2006 to 2015. The study uses expo factor research design and purposive sampling technique (filter) as research design and sampling technique. The population of the study is twenty (20) listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria and a sample size of ten (10) companies were studied. The data was analysed by means of descriptive statistics, Correlation and Regression analysis using STATA (version 11). The descriptive result reveals that return on assets has minimum and maximum values of -0.0400 and 0.4700 respectively and the mean and standard deviation of 0.1199 and 0.1038 respectively. The study made use of secondary data generated from annual report and account of the sampled companies through Nigeria Stock Exchange fact book. The findings include the following: Board size is negatively significant at 1% with T. Value of _2.70, Board composition is positively significant at 1% with T- Value of 2.15 and finally, Board meeting is negatively insignificant with T- Value of _1.45. This study concluded that smaller board size are more effective than larger board size, good proportion of board composition is a good factor to enhance ROA of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria and frequent board meeting will have negative effect on the ROA of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria because it will limits the chances for external directors to conduct a meaningful oversight over management. Hence the study recommends among others; That smaller board size should be used in listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria to enhance their ROA, the listed consumer goods companies should continue to maintain good proportion of independence directors. The listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria should discourage unnecessary board meetings to allow board of directors perform other oversight function on the management so as to enhance the ROA of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria.

The study examines the impact of capital structure on financial performance of firms in Nigerian cement industry. The population of the study 7 companies, a sample of 4 listed companies were selected. The research design is ex-post factor using two models to analyse the impacts of long term and short term debts on Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). The study uses balanced panel data of 20 observations from the 4 listed companies for the periods ranging from 2010-2014. Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression are used as tools of analysis. The study reveals that, there is statistically significant effect between long and short term liability on Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). The study however, concluded that the performance of companies in the cement industry is not optimized as a result of their inability to utilized debts in their capital structures. Finally, the paper recommends that, cement companies should encourage the use of long term debt in there capital structure since it has positive impact on their financial performance.
