Kawasan di Jalan Tubagus Ismail, Bandung merupakan kawasan hunian yang telah berubah menjadi kawasan dengan fungsi komersial. Di kawasan ini banyak ditemukan rumah usaha yang tumbuh dan berkembang secara spontan dan responsif terhadap keberadaan mahasiswa dari institusi-institusi pendidikan besar di Kota Bandung. Semakin intensifnya aktivitas dan tingginya pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar mahasiswa mengakibatkan terjadinya berbagai strategi adaptasi arsitektural yang dilakukan oleh pengguna rumah usaha sesuai dengan persepsi, power, dan desire mereka masing-masing. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi strategi adaptasi arsitektural pada rumah usaha di Jalan Tubagus Ismail. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif melalui pendekatan spatial practice dan representational space. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat kecenderungan strategi adaptasi arsitektural ditinjau dari pertimbangan terhadap kecocokan fungsi dengan lokasi usaha, layout ruang, tampak bangunan, dan penyediaan fasilitas bersama. Kekuatan ekonomi banyak berpengaruh dalam strategi adaptasi ini, meskipun tetap ditemukan keseimbangan antara hasrat ekonomis dengan kebutuhan berhuni dalam praktik ruang rumah usaha. Kajian terhadap strategi adaptasi arsitektural ini diharapkan mampu memberi kontribusi pada kajian sosio-spasial dalam arsitektur melalui telaah praktik spasial dan representasi ruang.
Grand Hotel Preanger merupakan sebuah hotel kolonial yang masih berjejak kokoh di Kota Bandung. Hotel yang terletak persis di Jalan Asia-Afrika ini telah berumur lebih dari satu abad semenjak pembangunan awalnya oleh W. H. C. van Deeterkom. Cikal pendirian hotel bergaya Art Deco tersebut adalah peristiwa penggabungan sebuah pesanggrahan dan toko yang gulung tikar di Grote Postweg (sekarang Jalan Asia-Afrika) pada tahun 1897. Pembangunan Grand Hotel Preanger pada masa itu menjadi sebuah primadona tersendiri bagi orang-orang Belanda yang tinggal di Kota Bandung. Selain itu, kaum borjuis tempo dulu sering menghabiskan akhir pekannya untuk bermalam di sana ketika turun ke pusat kota. Bahkan sekarang, meskipun sarat dengan kesan bangunan kuno, Grand Hotel Preanger masih tetap memikat para pelancong untuk datang menginap. Sementara fungsi asli bangunan tetap dipertahankan, bagaimanapun juga, seiring dengan perkembangan zaman, Grand Hotel Preanger telah sedikit-banyak mengalami perubahan, terutama dalam wujud dan bentuk fisik bangunan. Oleh karenanya, dalam tulisan ini akan ditelusur lebih jauh tentang perbandingan kondisi Grand Hotel Preanger tempo dulu dan sekarang dengan metode observasi dan temuan arsip yang tertinggal.
The area in Jalan Tubagus Ismail, Bandung is a lush residential area that now has turned into a commercial area. In this area, many shophouses grow and develop spontaneously and responsively due to the presence of students from top educational institutions in Bandung City. The intensification of activities and the high demand of basic needs from resident students have resulted in various architectural adaptation strategies carried out by shophouse owners based on their perceptions, powers, and desires. This study aims to identify the architectural adaptation strategies of shophouses in Jalan Tubagus Ismail. The study was conducted using qualitative research method through spatial practice and representational space approach. The result of this study shows that there is a tendency of architectural adaptation strategies in terms of consideration of the suitability between types of business and location, space layout, building facade, and provision of shared facility. Economic force plays important role in the adaptation strategies, even though it is also found that the balance between economic desire and need for dwelling still exists. The study of adaptive architectural strategy is expected to be able to contribute on socio-spatial relation in architecture through socio-spatial practice and representational space.
