BackgroundAvailability and accessibility of sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents are very crucial for prevention and control of sexual and reproductive health problems. These services also play vital roles in the promotion of adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health generally. The main purpose of the study was to determine the availability and accessibility (geographical and financial) of sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS) among adolescents in Enugu State, Nigeria.MethodsA mixed methods approach was adopted for the study. 192 health facilities were reached to check availability of SRH services. Randomly sampled 1447 adolescents (12–22 years) completed the questionnaire correctly. Twenty-seven interviews and 18 group discussions were conducted. Instruments for data collection consisted of a checklist, a questionnaire, a focus group discussion guide and an in-depth interview guide. All instruments were pre-tested. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests. NVivo 11 Pro software was used to code and thematically analyze the qualitative data.ResultsA total of 1447 adolescents (between 12 and 22 years) completed the questionnaire correctly. Among these adolescents, males constituted 42.9% while females were 57.1%. The majority (86.7%) of the adolescents reported availability of safe motherhood services, and 67.5% reported availability of services for prevention and management of STIs and HIV and AIDS. The majority reported that these services were geographically accessible but few were financially accessible to adolescents. However, qualitative data revealed that available services were not specifically provided for adolescents but for general use. Age (p = ≤ .05), education (p = ≤ .05) and income (p = ≤ .05) were found to be significantly associated with access to SRHS.ConclusionSRHS were generally physically available but not financially accessible to adolescents. Adolescents’ clinics were not available and this could affect the access of SRHS by adolescents. Education and income were significantly associated with access to SRHS.
Background Sexual and Reproductive health Services (SRHS) are essential for the prevention and control of SRH problems among young people and the achievement of sustainable development goal 3. These services may be available but certain factors interfere with their access and utilization by the young people. This study sought to determine factors that predict the utilization of SRHS among young people in Enugu State, Nigeria. Methods The study adopted mixed-method research employing a cross-sectional research design. The population of the study comprised young people between the ages of 12 and 22 years. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 1447 young people used for the study. A questionnaire, in-depth interview, and focus group discussion were used for data collection. Percentages, Chi-square, and logistic regression were used to analyse quantitative data, while qualitative data were thematically analysed using NVivo software. Results Socio-demographic factors of gender, age, education, income, and living status (p = < .05) were significant predictors of utilization of SRHS. Psycho-cultural and health system factors (p = < .05) were also significant predictors of utilization of SRHS. Conclusion The study concluded that some socio-demographic factors (of gender, age, level of education, income, and living status), psycho-cultural, and health system factors can be used to predict young people’s utilization of SRHS. These predictors could be addressed through home sex education, regular training of health care providers on youth-friendly services delivery, and policy reforms.
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. It is a major public health problem and disease burden worldwide, and especially in Nigeria. This study determined the gender differential in the incidence of Diabetes mellitus among the patients in Udi L.G.A of Enugu State. Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was employed. A sample of 343 diabetes mellitus patients were randomly selected and used for the study. Researchers design data documentary profoma was used to collect the data from selected health facilities in respect to the patients’ gender and their fasting sugar level as contained in their folder or hospital record/register. Frequency and percentages was used to answer research question while the null hypothesis was tested using Chi- square at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the result revealed a high incidence of Diabetes Mellitus in 2012, females recorded a high incidence of DM from 2008-2012 and high percentage of fasting blood sugar level than male. The finding also revealed no difference in the fasting blood sugar based on gender. It is recommended among others that diagnostic investigation on human placental lactose is advocated to reduce or stop its opposition to insulin secretion during pregnancy.
This study determined the temporal variation of students' drug abuse in Langtang North Local Government Area -LGA, Plateau state -Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was employed for the study with data collected from a sample of 752 students', selected through multi stage sampling procedure from all the secondary schools in Langtang North LGA. The instrument for data collection was investigators' structured ten items questionnaire. Face validation of the instrument was obtained through the judgement of five experts. A reliability index of .84 was obtained through the outcome of pilot testing using split half method. Frequencies, percentages and overall means were utilized to answer the research question while Chi-square statistic was used to test the null hypothesis at .05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that overall, a slightly higher proportion of the students' in the morning (40.4%), followed by during dry season (37.6%), in the evening (33.4%), during festive period (29.8%), at weekends (27.8%), and during rainy season (24.2%) moderately abused drugs. The study further revealed that students' drug abuse differed according to temporal variation (Cal χ 2 = 325.873 > χ 2 tab = 12.59, df = 6, p < .05). Following from the findings of the study, it was recommended that the Federal Government and Non-Governmental Organizations should endeavour to sponsor people to review the current intervention programs on drug abuse so as to strengthen measures that will further alter the negative attitudes and practices-related to inappropriate use of drugs that still exist. As the review on the current intervention programme is done; the outcome that is consistent with the current drug abuse trends when implemented ought to improve on the current status quo. As the current intervention programme is implemented and adopted, it will further curtail substance abuse thereby having informed and healthy people that will live devoid of drug abuse in Langtang North, Plateau state and the country at large.
