It has long been considered that vocabulary gives a good estimate of capacity for conceptual thought and, while the complexity of the language/thought relationship is very evident in relation to religious ideas, it is suggested that a carefully constructed test of religious language may be a suitable means of assessing the understanding of religious concepts. The development of such a test is described.
