El presente artículo corresponde a un análisis de la novela La vorágine, de José Eustasio Rivera. En primer lugar, se presenta un contexto de la obra (literario e histórico). Luego, se explica que lo narrado por Arturo Cova no es un viaje, sino un antiviaje: un desplazamiento continuo y forzoso. Se aplica un esquema narratológico mínimo para analizar la trayectoria del personaje principal y, posteriormente, se conceptualiza el determinismo evidenciado en el libro, en sus manifestaciones ambiental, sociológica y psicológica, y se identifica su presencia en la novela. Como metodología, se refieren citas y hechos que justifican la tesis de que Arturo Cova es arrastrado por las circunstancias; por lo cual se trata de un desplazamiento determinista. Él, en lugar de actuar, reacciona. Se deja llevar por las circunstancias. El remolino lo arrastra hacia el fondo. Al final de la obra, se puede constatar que tanto la selva como el azar y los otros lo redefinieron, lo reformaron (¿deformaron?), lo reconstruyeron. Ya no hay ideales, ya no hay presente ni futuro: “la selva lo devoró”.
El presente estudio se concentra en La Nieve del Almirante (Álvaro Mutis)1, considerada una de las novelas de viaje más importantes de la literatura latinoamericana. La historia gira en torno a Maqroll el Gaviero (personaje central), quien debe decidir entre dos destinos irreconciliables: permanecer junto a Flor Estévez (su amor ideal e idealizado) o partir en pos de los aserraderos. El objetivo principal es analizar las acciones del protagonista (Maqroll) integrando la crítica literaria y la perspectiva filosófica para demostrar que en ellas predomina el existencialismo. En concreto, se aplica un esquema narratológico mínimo (contextualización de la obra, acciones e intenciones del personaje principal y tipo de narrador, por ejemplo) y se realiza una aproximación filosófica, desde el existencialismo, para caracterizar a Maqroll con base en sus acciones más relevantes. De este modo, se aborda su trayectoria desde un enfoque transdiciplinario. En síntesis, se demuestra que Maqroll actúa acorde con los postulados del existencialismo (existencia-libertad-elección-angustia), más que con los del determinismo (como el personaje de Arturo Cova en La vorágine, quien actúa impulsado por las situaciones y no por voluntad propia). El análisis del texto permite plantear la tesis de que el Gaviero se presenta como un ser humano que decide libremente (actúa con plena voluntad) y se angustia por las implicaciones de sus acciones.
