Whether gathering around bonfires, watching TV, or sitting in front of computer screens, the pressures of Darwinian natural selection have forced individuals into tight patterns of interdependency, welded together by communication links. Can the information-sharing behavior of our species ever be brought into broader perspective and eventually foster greater harmony for all humankind? The authors argue that the answer to this question is «yes». Culture provides the necessary space for social negotiation and change. Advanced communication ability is the means by which this necessary cultural work is perpetually accomplished. A non-deterministic understanding of culture must be acknowledged from the outset. Cultural life differs greatly from biological conditions. Even under repressive conditions, culture is not determined the same way viral infections ravage biological bodies or computers. Technological advances in communication do not simply reinforce and intensify top-down, dominant cultural messages as theories of imperialism, memetic transmission, or social contagion contend. The pace of cultural development over the past 10,000 years has been particularly fast compared to any other time since hominids split from our common ancestor with chimpanzees millions of years ago. Our species’ unique skill as communicators in the dynamic technological and cultural environment of today offers real hope for retrieving the primordial affinities that unite us all.
Pages 75-9 1 Redefining the Image: Mimesis, Convention, and SemioticsStudies and the interpretation of images have relied on two intellectual solutions. lmages have been traditionally judged as imitation (mimesis) of the outside world. After Kant, however, images were understood as the outcome of rules of the mind that constitute the images and provide the key to visuality. Both interpretations are dualist: Mimesis presumes the mental mediation will provide the match between visual patterns and the natural world, whereas the conventionalist tradition stemming from Kant presumes that the system of a prior rule will ensure the match with reality. This paper presents Peircean semiotics as an alternative to what may be considered two sides of the same coin. The option is a triadic conceptual scheme program that redefines image making and what was considered imitation of reality.
The paper analyzes the effect of immersion in digital games using the theoretical apparatus of game theory. The paper illustrates interactive operations and the cause and effect relationship between player and designer, explaining the importance of strategic decision-making and pathing in player immersion. It considers the game function of creating a virtual world and proposes the idea that digital games are not just computer-mediated communication to the player. These games are games of "the moment", like the game Chicken, and played with apparently great emotion, intelligence, and physical dexterity, although represented in software form. The relationship between the player and the computer is one of sign exchange, precisely the one that semiotics calls semiosis. The paper concludes that the personal achievement of individual players (end-users) accounts for the phenomenon of deep immersion in digital games. Not virtuality, but virtuosity is the strong force in digital game playing.
Palavras-chave: comunicação, tecnologias, evolução humana, cultura AbstRACt At the current time, human evolution does not proceed exactly the same way as the biological principle, which depends on the adaptation of random variation and on the consequent competitive survival of the species in nature. This transformation varies on account of cultural innovation and moral determination, distinctive trace of the human being, the only specie who subordinates its genetic interests to other more lofty concerns. In the last millenium the rhythm of these changes was sped up impressively mainly after the Industrial Revolution, which converted the technological and cultural development into a global phenomenon, headed by the information and communications technology, a changing factor that leaded technological, cultural and genetic evolution.
