Este artigo revisa conceitos elaborados por Lina Bo Bardi, que tinha como objetivo tomar a tradição cultural do Brasil como base para um desenho industrial brasileiro. A partir desse contexto, enfatizamos as conceituações de arte popular e folclore, que revelam modos contrários de encarar os fatos populares: o primeiro, como expressão de uma civilização e o segundo, de maneira paternalista e estagnada. A seguir, discutimos a utilização de um letreiramento digital com características gráficas vernaculares em uma publicação de um banco digital em uma plataforma de mídias sociais a fim de identificar de que maneira se dá a relação das novas mídias com as expressões populares por meio do design. Concluímos que essa é uma relação de folclorização porque descontextualiza as pessoas e os processos produtivos envolvidos na produção dessa expressão gráfica. Essa discussão é pertinente para possibilitar discussões críticas do que é compreendido como design vernacular.
