Cellulosic ethanol is one of the most important biotechnological products to mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels and to increase the use of renewable resources for fuels and chemicals. Short rotation woody crops (SRWC) have been proposed as the most promising raw material for cellulosic ethanol production, as a result of its several advantages over traditional crops. In order to analyze the potential as crops for lignocellulosic bioethanol production in Chile, SRWC were established with the following species: Acacia melanoxylon, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens. These crops were established in two contrasting environments and in three plantation densities. The average theoretical ethanol yield at 48 months reached 395.9 L . t -1 for A. melanoxylon, 348.7 L . t -1 for E. camaldulensis, and 363.9 L t -1 for E. nitens. It can be concluded that there are significant differences in polysaccharides yield between species and time. On the other hand, significant differences were found between environments.In conclusion, this study has shown that the choice of SRWC species used as a source of polysaccharides must take into account the percentage content in biomass and, crucially, the species, planting density, harvest cycle and site must be carefully selected to ensure a high biomass yield per unit area. POTENCIAL DE BIOETANOL DE CULTURAS LENHOSAS CONDUZIDAS EM ALTA DENSIDADE E CURTA ROTAÇÃO EM TERRAS MARGINAIS NO CHILE CENTRALRESUMO: Etanol celulósico é um dos mais importantes produtos biotecnológicos para reduzir o consumo de combustíveis fósseis e a aumentar a utilização de recursos renováveis para combustíveis e produtos químicos. Culturas lenhosas de curta rotação (CLCR) têm sido propostas como a mais promissora matéria prima para produção de etanol celulósico, devido às suas várias vantagens sobre culturas tradicionais. Para analisar o potencial de culturas para produção de bioetanol lignocelulósicos no Chile, CLCR foram estabelecidos com as seguintes espécies: Acacia melanoxylon, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus e Eucalyptus nitens. Estas culturas foram estabelecidas em dois ambientes contrastantes e em três densidades de plantio. O rendimento teórico médio de etanol em 48 meses atingiu 395,9 L . t -1 para A. melanoxylon, 348,7 L . t -1 para E. camaldulensis e 363,9 L . t -1 para E. nitens. Foi concluído que existem diferenças significativas no rendimento de polissacarídeos entre as espécies e o tempo. Por outro lado, foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre ambientes. Em conclusão, este estudo mostrou que a escolha da espécie usada na CLCR como fonte de polissacarídeos deve levar em conta sua percentagem na biomassa e, crucialmente, a espécie, densidade de plantio, ciclo de colheita e sítio devem ser cuidadosamente selecionados para garantir um rendimento elevado de biomassa por unidade de área.

-Chile has strong interest in biomass production for the purpose of generating bioenergy to accomplish environmental standards for clean energy production. However, no yield or productivity information is available about forest crop plantations established at high-initial planting densities dedicated to energy production. The objective of the present study was to provide long-term results of short-rotation forest crops research trials, investigating first cutting cycle most promising species biomass production. Plantations of Acacia melanoxylon, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus, and Eucalyptus nitens were established at initial stockings of 5,000; 7,500 and 10,000 trees ha -1 on marginal sites with important nutritional and hydric limitations in the Biobío Region, Chile. After 48 months, E. camaldulensis reached the highest biomass yield at initial stocking of 7,500 trees ha -1 (22.5 Mg ha -1 ) on dry land granitic soils, and E. nitens reached 35.2 Mg ha -1 on sandy soils. Initial stockings and biomass yields were directly related, but strongly conditioned by mortality, where greater initial stocking concurred with greater mortality after 4 years. No entanto, não há informações de produtividade ou produtividade disponíveis sobre plantações de culturas florestais estabelecidas em densidades de plantio elevadas, dedicadas à produção de energia. O objetivo do presente estudo foi fornecer resultados a longo prazo de estudos de pesquisa de culturas florestais de rotação curta, investigando o primeiro ciclo de corte, a produção de biomassa de espécies mais promissoras. As plantações de Acacia melanoxylon, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus e Eucalyptus nitens foram estabelecidas em meias iniciais de 5.000; 7.500 e 10.000 árvores ha -1 em locais marginais com importantes limitações nutricionais e hídricas na Região Biobío, no Chile. Após 48 meses, E. camaldulensis atingiu o maior rendimento de biomassa na base inicial de 7.500 árvores ha -1 (22,5 Mg ha -1 ) em solos graníticos de terra seca e E. nitens atingiu 35,2 Mg ha -1 em solos arenosos. We quantified biomass and nutrient accumulation of Acacia dealbata Link and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. planted at stem densities of 5000 and 15000 ha À1 in a bioenergy plantation in Chile. We tested the hypotheses that species and stocking will not affect biomass or nutrient accumulation. Species and stocking did not affect biomass accumulation after five years; however, species and stocking did influence nutrient mass. A. dealbata had higher nitrogen mass than E. globulus for total (397 kg ha À1 more, i.e., 126% higher), foliage (188 kg ha À1 , 218%), branch (55 kg ha À1 , 95%), stem (120 kg ha À1 , 86%), and root (34 kg ha À1 , 109%) components, likely because A. dealbata fixes nitrogen. A. dealbata had lower calcium mass than E. globulus for branch (111 kg ha À1 , 60%) and stem (69 kg ha À1 , 39%) components. Root nitrogen and phosphorus masses and foliage, branch and root boron masses were significantly lower with a stocking density of 5000 ha À1. Low stocking produced the same amount of total biomass as high stocking for both species and would be less expensive to plant. A. dealbata had higher nitrogen mass and likely increased soil nitrogen. E. globulus had high calcium mass in the stem and branches; off-site losses could be mitigated with stem-only harvests and debarking of stems in the field. Given the rainfall patterns and water availability constraints in Chile, additional criteria including water use efficiency would be required to determine the best species for bioenergy plantations in Chile.
