A partir de una crítica del concepto objetivista de re-adaptación médica, y del concepto relativista de re-adaptación de algunos sociólogos, es desarrollada una concepción de la normalización para el análisis del proceso que consiste en hacer frente a una enfermedad crónica. Esta permite integrar los efectos de re-adaptación en diversos sectores de la vida (trabajo, dinero, casamiento, etc.), tener en cuenta la representacion subjetiva de la enfermedad y considerar los puntos de orientación de los participantes. La normalidad es conceptualizada como construction del medio.
La utilidad de estas reflexiones teóricas es fundada sobre un análisis de los procesos de readaptación de los enfermos que sufren de insuficiencia rénal y de los enformos epilépticos. Diversas formas del proceso de normalización familial son presentadas, la normalización familial e individual es discutida y los « costes y ventajas » de los esfuerzos de acomodación en los diversos sectores de lo cotidiano son examinados.
