As ligas com memória de forma apresentam a capacidade de agir como atuadores e, assim, substituir servomecanismos em um robô cobra, promovendo aumento do desempenho, redução de peso e geometria do robô. Em virtude disso, foram estudadas as ligas comercialmente disponíveis, seus diferentes formatos e como os robôs são capazes de se locomover. Ademais, fabricantes foram consultados para avaliar a diferença no uso de fios, fitas e molas e qual o material a ser adquirido para a liga. Com base nas propriedades mecânicas e elétricas que cada formato possui e na versatilidade do material, escolheu-se utilizar molas compostas de NiTi. Em seguida, por meio de ensaios mecânicos, foi avaliado o comportamento da liga quando aplicada uma corrente elétrica - meio de acionamento da mudança de forma. Com os testes realizados, pode-se concluir que as correntes baixas tornaram o acionamento mais lento e apresentaram um comportamento inesperado.
