The purpose of this action research was to gain an understanding of thephonics awareness through activity-based learning. The subject of thisstudy was 13 students of prep class at a low-paid private school locatedin a slum suburban area. The academic performance was evaluatedthrough dialogues with and observation of students. For this study 20sessions with students were conducted with different activities to developphonics and its effect on the personalities and level of learning andunderstanding of prep class students. The results of the study showed thatthe students tend to learn phonics more actively when they are exposedto activity-based learning. The head of the school and the classroomteachers appreciated that their students developed more intellectual skillsand abilities in them after these sessions.
