Este artículo analiza el papel de las abuelas en la sustracción familiar de infantes. A través de este acto se priva, injustificadamente, a uno de los progenitores de la convivencia con sus hijos. Las abuelas que alientan y participan en la sustracción de sus nietos legitiman o sustentan este acto en la violencia simbólica que ejercen contra las nueras o hijas.A partir de entrevistas en profundidad y la elaboración de la historia de vida de cuatro mujeres que enfrentan la sustracción de sus hijos en México, se estudia de qué manera la construcción social de la maternidad convencional propicia situaciones de agresión y conflicto entre mujeres en el ámbito privado. La sustracción de infantes resulta una expresión paradigmática del poder y control ejercido por abuelas que defienden su coto de dominio e identidad como las (únicas) “buenas” mujeres-madres.
Las investigaciones en torno a la adopción generalmente se centran en dos individuos: niños y niñas que son sujetos de adopción y la o las personas que las adoptan. Poco se conoce y reflexiona en torno a la situación de las mujeres que deciden no ser madres mediante la entrega de un hijo(a) en adopción. Generalmente, las mujeres que deciden renunciar a la maternidad lo ocultan, quieren evitar el rechazo social que suele recaer sobre quienes, por diversos motivos, deciden no ser madres.Actualmente, estas mujeres se han hecho más visibles, ya que a partir de la lucha antiabortista de grupos conservadores se han creado asociaciones de ayuda a mujeres embarazadas que no quieren o no pueden ser madres. La creciente e incesante migración internacional sur-norte es uno de los fenómenos sociales que ha marcado las últimas décadas (Martínez 2008). Según el Banco Mundial (2010), México es uno de los principales expulsores de migrantes a escala internacional, pero también es receptor de inmigrantes y transmigrantes, debido a los altos flujos de centro y sudamericanos que transitan o viven en México por tiempos variables, en su camino hacia Estados Unidos, principal país receptor de migrantes en la región (Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe, CEPAL 2006).
