RESUMO O objetivo desse trabalho foi monitorar as praias Odus e Barreiras situadas no município de Camocim-CE, durante cinco meses, através da determinação do Número Mais Provável (NMP) de coliformes fecais (CF) e de Escherichia coli/100mL além de isolar estirpes de E. coli, para análise da susceptibilidade a alguns antimicrobianos. Foram coletadas 21 amostras das águas, representando 17 semanas, de cada uma das praias, durante os meses de fevereiro a julho de 2003. Os resultados mostraram que a praia do Odus é a mais contaminada, estando Imprópria para balneabilidade durante oito semanas (47,0%), enquanto a praia das Barreiras foi considerada Própria durante todas as semanas estudadas. Foram isoladas 287 estirpes de E. coli das duas praias, destas, 80 foram analisadas antigenicamente, sendo que duas se enquadraram no grupo das enteropatogênicas clássicas (EPEC), pertencendo ao sorogrupo O25 e mostraram resistência à cefalotina e à tetraciclina. Com base nesses resultados, é possível diagnosticar que os valores de CF das praias e a baixa quantidade de cepas de E. coli EPEC não são preocupantes, sendo necessário porém, um monitoramento permanente dessas águas, uma vez que o aumento do número de turistas e da população nativa usuária tende a aumentar o nível de poluição.
