The purpose of this work is to compare the efficiency of different adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel produced by alkaline transesterification of soybean oil (Methanol/KOH). The proposed methodologies were based on the use of Magnesol ® , silica, Amberlite BD10 DRY ® and Purolite PD 206 ® as adsorbents and were developed by adsorption at 65 ºC. The response of each adsorbent was measured through the residual potassium, alcohol, water and soaps dissolved in the purified biodiesel. As a result, we observe that Magnesol ® and silica showed better adsorption properties than Amberlite BD10 DRY ® and Purolite PD 206 ® , especially for removing soap, free and bonded glycerol and potassium. In comparison to the conventional acid water washing, these matrices were found to be equally appropriate for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminant species from biodiesel. The main results found for these two adsorbents (Magnesol ® 1% and silica 2%) were values below 0.17 mg KOH g -1 for acid number, 1 mg kg -1 of K, 61 ppm of soap, 500 mg kg -1 of water, 0.22% of methanol and 0.03% of free glycerol. IntroductionBiodiesel is a diesel fuel substitute obtained mainly by basic catalytic transesterification of oils and fats, and it is composed by fatty acid mono-alkyl esters that are produced from the reaction of low-acid-number vegetable oils with an alcohol in the presence of a basic catalyst. [1][2][3] Biodiesel is currently produced by the base-catalyzed transmethylation of triglycerides, producing fatty acids methyl esters (FAME). 4,5 At the end of the reaction, the Faccini et al. 559 Vol. 22, No. 3, 2011 glycerol rich-phase is separated from the methyl ester layer by decantation.Methyl esters usually contain contaminant materials that are detrimental to the quality of the fuel, and must be eliminated from the product. Removal of glycerol and glycerides from biodies...

This review deals with silica based hybrid materials obtained by the sol-gel method. It involves concepts, classifications and important definitions regarding the sol-gel method that allows obtaining materials with organic and inorganic components dispersed in a molecular or nanometric level. We discuss the properties and characteristics of hybrid materials related to experimental synthesis conditions. We devote a special attention to the nanostructured materials, where the self-organization is imposed by the organic component. Finally, we present some important applications of these materials based on their specific properties. Keywords: organic-inorganic materials; silsesquioxanes; silica based hybrid xerogels.
) and its affinities to the metal halides were determined by analyzing the adsorption isotherms with the help of the model of fixed polydentate centers. The constants of the adsorption equilibria (β, in L mol -1 ) were used as the quantitative characteristics of affinity. For the FeCl 3 adsorption equilibrium the specific concentration of the sorption centers t σ-L + Clis equal to 1.42 and log β 11 = 3.14. The adsorption of CoCl 2 and CuCl 2 (MCl 2 ) is described in a more complicated way:The following values of parameters were obtained: t {σ -L+ Cl-} 2 = 0.20 and 0.115; log β 21 = 4.08 and 3.3 for CoCl 2 and CuCl 2 respectively.
-This paper was devoted to studying the influence of coating material (nanocapsules or nanospheres), drug model (diclofenac, acid or salt) and method of preparation on the morphological characteristics of nanoparticle-coated microparticles. The cores of microparticles were obtained by spray drying or evaporation and the coating was applied by spray drying. SEM analyses showed nanostructures coating the surface of nanocapsule-coated microparticles and a rugged surface for nanosphere-coated microparticles. The decrease in their surface areas was controlled by the nanoparticulated system, which was not dependent on microparticle size. Optical microscopy and X-ray analyses indicated that acid diclofenac crystals were present in formulations prepared with the acid as well as in the nanocapsule-coated microparticles prepared with the salt. The control of coating is dependent on the use of nanocapsules or nanospheres and independent of either the characteristics of the drug or the method of preparing the core.
