Introdução: A radiação ultravioleta gera reações fotoquímicas na pele. Exposições a essa radiação levam a efeitos indesejados, desde uma simples queimadura na pele até problemas mais graves como o câncer de pele. A busca de substâncias, em especial as contidas em extratos vegetais, com potencial ação fotoprotetora é uma importante ferramenta no combate aos danos das radiações UVA/UVB. Objetivo: o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o Fator de Proteção Solar (FPS) in vitro do extrato etanólico das folhas de Psidium guajava. Metodologia: o material vegetal foi seco em estufa a 40ºC, moído e macerado em uma solução de álcool etílico P.A. por 72 horas, o filtrado obtido teve o volume do solvente reduzido. O FPS foi determinado pelo método in vitro desenvolvido por Mansur e colaboradores (1986). Foram utilizadas as concentrações 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 e 500 μg/mL de extrato etanólico das folhas de P. guajava e do padrão Benzofenona. A leitura das amostras foi feita em aparelho espectrofotômetro. O álcool etílico P.A. foi utilizado como branco e as leituras de absorbâncias foram registradas na faixa do comprimento de onda UVB em intervalos de 5 nm. Resultados: os resultados demonstram que na concentração de 500 μg/mL o FPS encontrado foi 29,79 ± 0,001. Conclusão: Diante dos valores encontrados nas concentrações analisadas no extrato etanólico de P. guajava, sugere-se o uso da espécie no desenvolvimento de formulações fotoprotetoras.
