La distribución de los organismos que habitan en los litorales rocosos del mundo es afectada por diversos factores físicos que varían con respecto a la altura intermareal, la cual se hace particularmente amplia en la costa pacífi ca colombiana. Debido a esto se estudió cómo la localidad, la exposición al oleaje y la posición en la zona intermareal afectan la riqueza, la abundancia y la distribución de las especies más representativas que se encuentran en los litorales rocosos del Parque Nacional Natural Utría (PNNU). Las especies más abundantes fueron los gasterópodos Nerita scabricosta,N. funiculata,Littorina modesta,L. asperay el cirripedio Cthamalus panamensis, y mostraron un claro patrón de segregación dentro de la zona intermareal. La exposición al ojeaje dentro de las pequeñas bahías de las tres localidades infl uyó en la riqueza y el promedio de especies encontradas, pero no en la abundancia. Por otro lado, el patrón de distribución observado en las especies más abundantes se explica principalmente por las características intrínsecas y su capacidad para colonizar áreas específi cas a lo largo del litoral rocoso.
Los erizos desempeñan un papel importante en el proceso de erosión de sustratos duros del bentos marino. Además de contribuir a la desintegración del sustrato, este proceso proporciona espacio para el asentamiento de epifauna y puede incrementar la complejidad del hábitat. Debido a que no existen estudios previos sobre la bioerosión por erizos en la región de Bahía Málaga, Pacífico colombiano, se estimaron las tasas de bioerosión de tres especies de erizos (Centrostephanus coronatus, Diadema mexicanum y Hesperocidaris asteriscus) mediante el análisis de su contenido intestinal. Además se estimó el tiempo de recambio intestinal en otra especie (Echinometra vanbrunti, N=10), el cual fue de 10-12 h y no concordó con el tiempo asumido en estudios previos (24 horas). Esto sugiere que estos estudios subestimaron las tasas de bioerosión realizada por erizos. Aunque E. vanbrunti fue significativamente más abundante que las otras especies de erizos, los individuos de D. mexicanum fueron más grandes y por lo tanto la tasa de bioerosión producida por esta especie fue la mayor. Se observó una relación positiva entre la tasa de bioerosión y el tamaño de la testa de los erizos.
