Cet article analyse la rhétorique de l'exemple et sa réception chez deux autobiographes francophones africains. À travers une lecture croisée de Kesso, Princesse peuhle de Kesso Barry et Amkoullel, l'enfant peul d'Hampâté Bâ notre étude démontre deux rhétoriques de l'exemple divergentes: l'une contradictoire et à allocutaires multiples (Barry) et l'autre cohérente et focalisée sur un allocutaire unique non-Africain (Bâ). Il en ressort que le couplage rhétorique et réception problématisent l'écriture de l'autobiographie africaine dont la pertinence rhétorique fluctue au gré des allocutaires visés. Le degré de focalisation sur la colonisation dans ces deux autobiographies affecte également la construction de cette rhétorique.
