El biogás, considerado alternativo al uso de combustibles fósiles, tiene como impurezas al dióxido de carbono (CO2) y ácido sulfhídrico (H2S) y debe purificarse para obtener biometano con contenido superior al 90% de metano (CH4) y ser utilizado como combustible doméstico y automotor. Por ello se ha planteado purificar el biogás procedente de lodos de palma aceitera (Elaeis guineensis), utilizando componentes químicos: monoetanolamina (MEA) y ácido acético (ÁAC), como tratamiento testigo T0 y T0ꞌ en concentraciones de 30, 50, 70%; la mezcla de ambos en los tratamientos T1 30% MEA y 70% ÁAC, T2 50% MEA y 50% ÁAC y T3 70% MEA y 30% ÁAC. Los resultados muestran para T0 concentraciones de 31% de CO2, 47 ppm de H2S y 69% de CH4 y al T0ꞌ con 44% de CO2, 55 ppm de H2S y 56% de CH4; de las mezclas, el mejor resultado se obtuvo con el T1 con 25% de CO2, 40 ppm de H2S, 75% de CH4 y 7145 kcal; concluyendo que el porcentaje de CH4 registrado (75%) no permite obtener biometano por requerir 90 - 95% de CH4, pero dicho biogás tiene alta calidad y 15 puede usarse para cocción o para combustible de motores.
