Los medios de comunicación facilitan los procesos de socialización, en un contexto donde la interactividad, la digitalización y el desarrollo de plataformas avanza de forma vertiginosa, y la ciudadanía demanda el desarrollo de competencias que potencien capacidades y promuevan el ejercicio de derechos con responsabilidad, independencia y autonomía. La comprensión crítica es una dimensión de la competencia mediática que, desde la toma de conciencia, se corresponde con el pensamiento crítico para resolver problemas. En la presente investigación, se presentan resultados de la aplicación de un cuestionario a 2158 jóvenes usuarios de redes en Bolivia, Colombia y Ecuador. El objetivo del estudio fue explorar la comprensión crítica como una de las dimensiones de la competencia mediática, y se concentró en las capacidades de: lectura, comprensión y evaluación. Se observó que los jóvenes tienen desarrollada la comprensión crítica, con autonomía, que muestra una propia lectura y resignificación de los medios, más allá del determinismo tecnológico. Por esa razón, es necesario el fortalecimiento del potenciamiento crítico ante los contenidos que reciben y producen los jóvenes, con el acompañamiento de docentes que accedan a la formación en educación mediática, para avanzar en un proceso transformador e integral.
