Le Bureau du Ndakina du Grand Conseil de la Nation Waban-Aki a développé un protocole de gestion du patrimoine archéologique. Ce protocole se positionne en réaction aux abus passés et présents dans la gestion du matériel archéologique sur le territoire ancestral de la nation. Nous présentons dans cet article les défis auxquels le Bureau est confronté, illustrés par trois cas de figure : 1) les limites du rapatriement d’objets situés sur la portion états-unienne du territoire ancestral ; 2) l’enjeu des archéologues amateurs et de la constitution de collections privées ; 3) le cas du rapatriement d’une collection provenant d’un site funéraire w8banaki. Ces exemples nous mènent à affirmer que la vie des objets se poursuit bien au-delà de leur abandon dans le sol. Leur muséification constitue parfois leur mort sociale, mais une vie symbolique persiste, car ce matériel devient vecteur de revendications et de reconstruction symbolique. Les objets sont porteurs de savoirs et ils sont centraux à la construction identitaire des groupes et des individus. De plus, dans le contexte précis des nations autochtones, ils occupent un rôle de médiateur et sont sujets à diverses formes de politisation. Comme nous tentons de le démontrer en ancrant cet article dans l’expérience récente de la Nation w8banaki, les objets peuvent être instrumentalisés simultanément à diverses fins. C’est dans ce contexte que s’inscrivent les démarches récentes et croissantes de rapatriement de matériel archéologique et ethnologique, un concept qu’il importe de considérer avec beaucoup de vigilance.
