Salud. 2017;15(1):48-56 R E S U M E NLa depresión es un trastorno crónico recurrente con importantes consecuencias negativas, siendo probablemente la primera causa de sufrimiento del adulto mayor. El objetivo de este estudio transversal fue determinar la frecuencia de depresión y factores de riesgo en adultos mayores de 60 años hospitalizados en el Hospital Geriátrico "Dr. Gerardo Boungermini" del Instituto de Previsión Social en el periodo 2014-2015. Previa firma de consentimiento informado se aplicó un cuestionario conteniendo la escala validada geriátrica de Yesavage (depresión), la escala de Barthel (actividades básicas de la vida diaria) y la escala de Lawton (actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria). Participaron del estudio 60 adultos mayores entre 61 y 95 años de edad; 50% del sexo femenino, 56,7% de estado civil casado, y 73,3% de escolaridad primaria. El 90,0% consumía algún medicamento y el 96,7% presentaba alguna comorbilidad, siendo la hipertensión la más frecuente. La depresión se observó en 88,3% siendo leve en 50,0%. El 86,7% presentaba dependencia para actividades básicas y 95,0% para las instrumentales de la vida diaria. De los factores de riesgo estudiados se encontró asociación entre dependencia funcional y depresión. La frecuencia de depresión fue elevada, la cual puede representar una importante carga para el paciente, la familia y la institución. El personal sanitario de atención primaria es clave en la evaluación del estado mental de las personas mayores, tanto desde el punto de vista afectivo como cognoscitivo.Palabras clave: Adulto Mayor, Depresión, Factores de Riesgo. Depression and associated risk factors in hospitalized geriatric patients A B S T R A C TDepression is a recurrent chronic disorder with important negative consequences, being probably the first cause of suffering of the elderly. The objective of this crosssectional study was to determine the frequency of depression and risk factors in adults older than 60 years hospitalized at the Hospital Geriatrico "Dr. Gerardo Boungermini of the Instituto de Prevision Social during the period 2014-2015. After signing an informed consent, a questionnaire containing the geriatric depression scale of Yesavage, the Barthel scale (basic activities of daily living) and the Lawton instrumental activities of daily life scale were applied. Sixty elderly people participated in the study ages between 61 and 95 years, 50.0% was women. 56.7% was married, and 73.3% had primary school. Ninety percent used some medication and 96.7% presented some comorbidity, with hypertension being the most frequent. Depression was observed in 88.3% being mild in 50.0%.
