The boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), can remain inside dry and deformed reproductive structures of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum Linnaeus (Malvaceae), known as dry bolls, during the cotton fallow to infest the next cotton crop. In this study, the influence of cotton cultivars and sowing densities on the formation of dry bolls was evaluated. In addition, dry bolls were dissected and internal structures that were related to boll weevil development were estimated. Finally, the presence and survival of boll weevils inside dry bolls were evaluated. The results indicate that the number of dry bolls, empty pupal cells, and emergence holes was influenced by cultivar and not by sowing density. Almost one-quarter (22.53%) of adult boll weevils examined was found alive inside the dry bolls after 10 weeks, which is slightly longer than the duration of cotton fallow in Brazil’s main cotton-producing regions. Therefore, remaining inside the dry bolls is an important survival strategy for boll weevils during the cotton fallow period, and cotton cultivars with a greater propensity for the formation of dry bolls might favour survival of the pest during this period.
Seeds were subjected to the following tests: water content, weight of a thousand seeds, germination, first count, emergence speed index, emergency, shoot length, dry mass of seedlings and electrical conductivity. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replications of 50 seeds per treatment. The cultivar TMG 642 demonstrated low physiological seed quality when compared with the DP 604 cultivars, FM 993, BRS 368, and DELTA OPAL. Germination tests, electrical conductivity and germination rate index showed efficiency in the separation of cotton seed varieties in force levels.
Leaf-cutting ants from the Atta and Acromyrmex genera (Myrmicinae: Attini) are general pests in agricultural crops, forestry and pastures. The Acromyrmex genus is endemic in the Americas and its distribution occurs from California (USA) to Patagonia (Argentina), being present in Mexico, Central America, as well as Cuba and the Lesser Antilles (Trinidad, Tobago, Corriacou, Curaçao and Guadeloupe) and in all countries of South America, except Chile (Gonçalves, 1961; Weber, 1972; Delabie et al., 2011). Some Acromyrmex species, like A. balzani (E.) and A. landolti (F.), have specialized in cutting monocots, occurring in high densities of nests and causing severe damage to pastures due to the fact that they cut the grass very close to the ground (Mariconi et al., 1963; Amante, 1967a, b). In pastures in the municipality of Itapetinga, State of Bahia, in Brazil, the occurrence of A. landolti is common, reaching average density of 260 nests ha-1 (Silva Júnior et al., 2013). The control of leaf-cutting ants can be accomplished by mechanical, cultural, biological and chemical methods, and chemical control is the only one used on a large scale.
Silicon is an inducer of plant resistance to arthropod pests, being a promising strategy for integrated management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of silicon on biological, reproductive and population aspects of parental and F1 generations of the two-spotted spider mite on strawberry plants. Potassium silicate, nanosilica and water were applied to the plants. Two-spotted spider mite females were confined to strawberry leaf disks for oviposition and, after hatching, larvae were observed until the emergence of adults. Once adults had been obtained, couples were formed in order to evaluate pre-oviposition, oviposition, longevity and fertility, with an estimated net reproduction rate, intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate of increase and the necessary time for doubling the generation. Silicon prolonged the duration of some immature stages of the mites in parental and F1 generations, did not affect the duration of the whole biological cycle, though. The periods of pre-oviposition, oviposition and longevity of the parental generation and the longevity and oviposition of F1 generation of the two-spotted spider mite were negatively affected by potassium silicate and nanosilica. The population parameters of the parental generation of the mites indicated that nanosilica is able to lead to a long-run decrease of this pest population.
