While the demand for a strong teaching workforce has been a top priority in recent years, the supply of highly qualified teachers has not been matching demand. This article highlights that the most severe shortages occur in the areas of Special Education and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Some of the main reasons for teacher shortages are an increase in student population and teacher attrition. In addition to teacher attrition, the number of students going into the field of education is declining. One way to correct this problem is to involve local districts in the recruitment and hiring of potential teacher candidates. Other factors include the need for teachers to be trained in research‐based reforms and opportunities for classes in teaching methods and instruction are also discussed.
