It is generally believed that it is too challenging to deliver technical laboratory courses using distance learning technologies. The focus of this research was to develop strategies that may be used to address these challenges. A research team composed of faculty from several universities and community colleges explored what might be needed to make these types of technical laboratory course instruction possible using distance learning technologies. The team explored delivering a microcontroller embedded systems design course through audiovisual distance learning technologies. The team's research and development activities are discussed. These include focuses on the technical training equipment that had to be designed to support the course's microcontroller technologies curriculum and laboratory modules, instructional support videos, and the design of an electronic server system to support this instruction. Also discussed will be the findings from the faculty of other colleges and universities who received professional development training from the research team on teaching microcontroller technology courses using distance learning technologies.

In this paper, we determine the statistical properties of the Real Time Protocol (RTP) flows and enhance the Statistical Protocol Identification (SPID) application to differentiate voice and data traffic. We added 3 new attribute meters and generate a model database for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and RTP protocols. The preliminary results with very low number of training capture seem promising. The results show that our new attributes improve the RTP flow identification recall by 15%.

In most capstone design courses, students go through the complete design process starting with a description of the problem and ending with a prototype. Many schools have one or two-semester-long classes where students work in groups or individually. The capstone design course in the Division of Engineering Technology at Wayne State University (WSU) falls into this category. The National Science Foundation funded Greenfield Coalition's (GC) capstone design course, however, is unique since students are given credit for their projects based on real-work experiences. This paper discusses how this is done at the Greenfield Coalition and the implications of adapting this course to Wayne State University's Division of Engineering Technology (ET) curricula.
