Purpose-Information, due to its nature, has numerous capabilities. Through utilizing these capabilities, information systems can add to the value of information. The purpose of this paper is to explain where and how added value emerge form the work processes in library and information professions. Design/methodology/approach-The paper begins with a review of the related literature and then takes a conceptual approach to discuss different values of information and IR systems; elaborates on how each of the processes like assessment of needs, selection, description/organization, storage/processing, search/retrieval, and dissemination generate capabilities that lead to added value. Findings-The paper identifies that added value is generated through processes such as reproduction, exchange, transfer, refinement, analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and regeneration of information. Many of such processes turn information into knowledge. Practical implications-Librarians and information specialists need to find practical ways in their work processes regarding how to design information systems and services which can generate added value for information. Research limitations/implications-This paper is based on the author's reflections on the matter of added value generated by library and information practice. Further empirical studies are needed to substantiate the extent to which such values are generated through information systems and services in the real world. Originality/value-In the present evolving conditions, library and information professionals are able to add to the value of information by sharing their knowledge with the expertise of computer scientists and finding ways and up-to-date methods of optimizing existing systems, as well as designing new systems. Purpose -The aim of this paper is to investigate contextual information that has an impact on the process of selection and decision making in recommender systems (RSs) in digital libraries. Design/methodology/approach -Using a grounded theory method of qualitative research, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 22 information specialists, and IT and computer engineering students and professors. Data resulting from interviews were analysed in two stages using open coding, followed by axial and selective coding. Findings -The central idea (concept) developed in this study, named scientific research ground (SRG), is an information ground users step into with scholarly purposes. Within SRG they start interacting with information systems. SRG has contexts which situate users in a range of situations while interacting with information systems. Users' characteristics such as purpose, activity, literacy, mental state, expectations, and assumptions, occupational and social status are some contexts that should be taken into account for making a recommendation. Research limitations/implications -This study sought to explore contextual information in the academic community and the academic contextual information cannot be generalized to RSs in other environments such as e-commerce. Practical implications -Identifying and implementing contextual information in information systems can help make better recommendations as well as improve interaction between users and information systems. Originality/value -Based on the SRG idea and its contexts, a multi-layer contextual model for a recommender system is proposed.
The Islamic Republic of Iran's parliament, the Maj/is, passed in 1990 a law setting out the functions of its national library. In 2005, the inauguration of the first stage of the new national library building was celebrated as a major national cultural and architectural achievement. This article looks at the origins and evolution of the National Library of Iran (NL/), considers its changing place within the Iranian library system, and also briefly considers what scope it has for developing. It also examines the nature of the new building, asking how well it is designed to implement the guidelines laid down by the Majlis and what scope and flexibility it allows for future developments.
