Сучасна кінематика території Азербайджану визначається переміщенням на північ Аравійської плити щодо Євразії. «Вторгнення» Аравійської плити в Євразію, що триває, будучи причиною деформації земної кори Кавказького блока, викликає землетруси, зареєстровані на всій території країни. Для дослідження геодинамічних процесів і внутрішньоплитових деформацій використовують методи глобального позиціонування (GPS). GPS-мережа Азербайджану була заснована в 1998 р. За період 1998-2016 рр. у більшості пунктів вимірювання проведено від 3 до 6 разів. Досліджено структуру розподілу полів GPS-швидкостей горизонтальних рухів внутрішньоплитових зон (доменів) для території Азербайджану. Проведено порівняльний аналіз закономірностей розподілу сейсмічних явищ і векторів швидкостей горизонтальних рухів та деформацій, отриманих за результатами моніторингу на GPS-мережі Азербайджану. Розподіл деформацій для досліджуваної території обчислено за даними Шена з використанням горизонтальних компонент GPS-швидкостей. Для порівняльного аналізу швидкостей GPS і сейсмічності використано карту розподілу кількості землетрусів Азербайджану з магнітудою M ≥ 3 за період 2003-2017 рр. В результаті визначені такі «доменні» зони-складчаста система Великого Кавказу, складчаста система Малого Кавказу, Середня Кура, Талиш, Гусар-Шабранський крайовий прогин і Гобустан-Абшеронська зона. При цьому встановлено, що зони високої сейсмічності знаходяться в зонах високого градієнта GPS-швидкостей, причому зони високої сейсмічності збігаються переважно із зонами високої швидкості деформації стиснення. Виявлено, що Гобустан-Абшеронська зона високих швидкостей деформацій не є високосейсмічною. Можливо, це спричинено пластичністю геологічного середовища.
