This clinical consensus statement was developed by and for otolaryngologists and is intended to promote appropriate and, when possible, evidence-based care for patients undergoing septoplasty with or without inferior turbinate reduction. A complete definition of septoplasty with or without inferior turbinate reduction was first developed, and additional statements were subsequently produced and evaluated addressing diagnosis, medical management prior to septoplasty, and surgical considerations, as well as the appropriate role of perioperative, postoperative, and adjuvant procedures, in addition to outcomes. Additionally, a series of clinical statements were developed, such as "Computed tomography scan may not accurately demonstrate the degree of septal deviation," "Septoplasty can assist delivery of intranasal medications to the nasal cavity," "Endoscopy can be used to improve visualization of posterior-based septal deviation during septoplasty," and "Quilting sutures can obviate the need for nasal packing after septoplasty." It is anticipated that the application of these principles will result in decreased variations in the care of septoplasty patients and an increase in the quality of care.
This is the 1st study to describe TL practices of nurse leaders in PNAs. Results of this study show that nurse leaders of PNAs emulate practices of TL. Transformational leaders can mobilize and direct association members in reaching shared values, objectives, and outcomes. Understanding TL practices of nurse leaders in PNAs are important to the future of nursing in order to enable nurses to lead change and advance health through these organizations.
This article discusses the critical role professional nurses will play and the tremendous impact nursing education and leadership development will have on the future of health care, as outlined in the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's report, "The future of nursing: Leading change, and advancing health." Six doctorate of nursing practice students from Case Western Reserve University analyzed the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report and developed projects to disseminate key components to selected organizations. The students developed two primary initiatives. One initiative involved presenting the report to various professional organizations, including a local chapter of an international honor society, a specialty organization, and a health care organization. The second initiative included interviewing several nurse leaders within a large multihospital health system, and a nursing leader in academia to determine (a) the level of awareness about the IOM report and (b) strategies these leaders have implemented or envisioned to address the report recommendations.
Department of Health Start Smart then Focus recommends that successful antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes include a ward-focused antimicrobial team. Nurses are underutilised in AMS, and nurse/pharmacist-led initiatives have not been well described in the literature. A shortage of consultant microbiologists has required the AMS team to consider a creative multidisciplinary approach to post-prescription review and individual feedback at ward level. Discussion This project has demonstrated the value of a nurse/pharmacist collaboration for improving antimicrobial prescribing. The low intervention rate for IVOS was deemed to be due to the timing of intervention in relation to patient admission and has led to a change of focus to areas where duration of stay is typically longer. Future vision is to ensure sustainability in the context of long-term doctor shortages and continue to evidence the value of non-medical prescribers in AMS.
