Calculated results based on a theoretical analysis of hydraulic transients in pipes taking into account the viscoelastic behavior of pipewall material are compared with experimental results. This comparison shows that the model accurately predicts pressure fluctuations in fluid and circumferential strain changes of the pipe during transients resulting from the rapid closure of a valve.
This theoretical study of the effect of viscoelastic material properties of a pipe conveying one-dimensional, non-stationary flow shows that, in addition to exponential attenuation of wave fronts, the disturbance is transformed into a diffusion front whose thickness increases as V?, and which propagates at a velocity corresponding to the retarded elasticity of the pipe material [E (,oo)]. The behaviour of pressure disturb ances in the special case of water-hammer resulting from sudden closure of a valve is illustrated by a numerical application based on the characteristics method. For a pipe of finite length L fed from a constant-level tank, a damped oscillation of period 2LJa is observed, corresponding to a pseudo-velocity of propagation a which is calculated on the assumption that deformations associated with relaxation times smaller than 2L/a 0 are instantaneous, where a 0 is the true elastic wave celerity (a">ö).
Detailed flow measurements in the impeller and the diffuser of an industrial centrifugal pump have been performed with a 2-component laser Doppler velocimeter. Measurements were made at 8 radial positions for flow rates ranging from 50% to 100% of design flow. The experimental results were compared to 3D turbulent flow calculations performed with a finite element code. At nominal flow rate, both measurements and calculations show a wake pattern along the suction side at the shroud. The flow is separated in the diffuser on the hub, and on the shroud at low flow rate. The inlet recirculation, occurring at 0.65 Qn is well predicted by the turbulent flow calculation.
Basic relations and method of solution are given for laminar transient flows in linear viscoelastic circular fluid transmission lines. Using a numerical method to invert the Laplace-Carson transforms, basic step response plots are given for semi-infinite liquid-lines. The method can be immediately applied to any practical problem with linear or explicitly time dependent boundary conditions. Analytical expressions are given for the behavior at the wave front and for large values of time. Also derived are classical parameters characterizing the frequency response.
