Aesthetics has been described as an important factor of railway infrastructure. The paper characterizes policies of railway companies in Japan and Europe during recent period of "station renaissance" when aesthetics became important issue. It compares Japanese and European railway stations and introduces strategies to improve design process and stations in Japan, such as strengthening of the relationship between city planning, station planning and management; reinforcing the advanced community-based planning; introducing the measures to increase public awareness of aesthetics; promoting of a comprehensive station design; enforcing of landscape and aesthetic control; conducting design competitions for railway stations and maintaining stricter control of advertising in public places.
Practical examples of modern architecture in the western hemisphere based on structural compositions of steel and glass have been presented several times in recent years. In doing so, their theoretical background has also been discussed. This paper focuses on the relevant architectural manifestations in Japan. Buildings for commercial and public use are the sole interest here -with special emphasis on the ultramodern character of their design. It is planned to consider infrastructure elements such as railway stations and airport structures in a future article.
<p> Travel by railways is now more popular than it was several years ago. Along with the “station renaissance”, many new stations have been built and many historical stations have been refurbished and developed. Stations have become more user-friendly, satisfying many needs and various additional functions. This paper examines factors, which have an influence that railway stations in Europe and Japan have become more designated for people than, like before, for trains. The conclusion is that both in Europe and Japan many factors of station design are essential for people and make travel by rail more convenient.</p>
<p>Railway stations are important elements of the urban infrastructure exerting a substantial influence on the image of the city. The paper shows several examples of new railway stations with innovative structures that have a great impact on their urban surrounding. Such modern stations have appeared as a result of the “station renaissance” trend, promoted by the railway companies.</p><p>The reinvented rail travel conferred upon the railway stations several new physical and meaningful dimensions. New urban spaces shaped by the new stations have the size of large metropolitan “station cities”, with attractive architecture and urban links, connected by high-speed railways. The paper examines these stations on the example of Europe and Japan, and concludes that these new transport facilities are not only changing the cityscape, but also are becoming the new diversified urban city centres.</p>
It is presently recognized worldwide that the colours of steel bridges -besides their form -serve as one of the key factors of their aesthetic design. This paper refers to the colouring problem being characteristic of Japan, since -in addition to the respect for the usual theory of colours -special Japanese particulars, based on tradition and philosophy of life, are followed.
