Highlight The steady decline in the sisal market has resulted in greater emphasis on raising of livestock from sisal areas and from native rangelands in Tanzania. Livestock productsion in many areas of Tanzania is limited by Tsetse fly (Glossina pallidipes). However, in large blocks of land cleared for sisal production, Tsetse, which breeds in dense bushlands is now a minor problem. Proper planning for uniform utilization and maximum sustained production from rangelands are based on local experience and experimental data. In the Tanga Region of Tanzania experimental data for proper planning is lacking. This article presents the results from a range site survey and estimation of the livestock production capacity in the sisal areas of the Tanga Region. Also, the report emphasizes the need for more detailed studies.
Highlight: Spreading or creeping deserts worldwide are causing concern. Recent publicity indicates that man's efforts in supplying technology and aide projects to stem the desertification process have not always been successful. Range management as a component of technology is put on the defensive. An appraisal of the role that range management plays in the arid and semiarid regions, with special emphasis on the Sahel, is needed. The Sahel rangeland lately has become a target of publicity, mainly because, with today's communications technology, alarms are easily spread. Our knowledge about desertification dates back only from the last few decades, and alarming accounts have come to us when droughts occur in certain arid and semiarid regions. At the same time, in trying to find the answers as to why and how it happened, efforts are being made to fix the blame on what or who is the cause of it. Time magazine (Time, Sept. 12, 1977) stated that Public Health vastly expanded the area's population; animal health programs resulted in increased animal numbers; and new wells lulled the Africans
In many areas of east Africa cattle dips are needid to combat tickborne diseases. Currently the dips are installed near permanent water supplies and easy access roads, which leads to concentrations of livestock and overgrazing. However, with better management planning dips may be used as a tool to open new grazing areas and to increase the carrying capacity of the region. This article refers to the existing Tanzanian government programs for the pastoral peoples located mainly in the Masai district of northern Tanzania.
