Mexico Email: cecilia.meza@gmail.comThe aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between gender, body mass index and self-concept in adolescents from Monterrey, Mexico; and to compare the participants by gender groups and body mass. The sample consisted of 849 adolescents (age = 13.17 ± 0.91; BMI = 22.46, ± 4.67; 53.7% girls and 46.3% boys). As instruments the AF5 Self Concept Scale, a scale and a stadiometer were used. It was found that overweight and obesity are linked to gender and total self-concept as well as the physical self-concept. In addition it became apparent that there are significant differences between boys and girls in the academic, social, emotional and physical dimensions of self-concept; while comparisons by weight groups showed differences in the physical and total self-concept (p<.05). The physical dimension of a person influences their definition of themselves, and therefore, it is recommended to develop strategies for addressing overweight and obesity in adolescents, attending to the differences observed in weight groups and gender. Key words: adolescence; self-concept; gender; overweight and obesity. AbstractRecibido 11 de Junio 2015 / Aceptado: 21 de Octubre 2015
