Nas águas barrentas do rio Amazonas existem grandes quantidades de larvas de Characiformes (Araujo-Lima, 198Ό.Entre elas estão as larvas de Semaprochí lodus spp. (R_i_ beiro, 1983), Anostomidae (Santos, 1 98O) , Co 1 os soma rnac ropomurn (Goulding & Carvalho, 1982), Curimatidae e Mylossoma spp. A identificação destas larvas é o primeiro passo para que se possa estudar sua ecologia neste ambiente e, assim, entender os fatores que controlam sua sobrevivência. Focalizar na sobrevivência destas larvas serã importante, pois estas espécies são a base da pesca comercial na Amazônia central (Petrere, 1985), e é geralmente aceito que a abundância de uma classe etária de um estoque pesquei ro ê gover nada por variações anuais de um ou vários parâmetros ambientais que agem em algum ponto do seu período larval.A identificação das larvas de peixes é geralmente baseada em vários caracteres mor fológicos como características merísticas e morfometricas, pigmentaçao e estãdio de desen volvimento de órgãos, relativo ao tamanho da larva.
