Summary:The analysis of more than one million clinical chemical data in human blood revealed age and sex dependencies of most of the 18 parameters investigated. Pronounced sex related differences were found in cholesterol, copper and uric acid, the changes being most distinct during reproductive life. During childhood either higher values for example with alkaline phosphatase or lower concentrations for example with iron and copper were found. Changes at these life periods reflect physiological mechanisms and pathophysiological mechanisms. With advancing age 13 parameters showed significant alterations which lead either to substantial increases or decreases of the concentrations measured. These differences may be related partly to limitations of the functional capacity o1 the respective organs or partly to changes in life habits both occuring in elderly patients.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
