-Availability of basic information on weed biology is an essential tool for designing integrated management programs for agricultural systems. Thus, this study was carried out in order to calculate the base temperature (Tb) of southern sandbur (Cenchrus echinatus), as well as fit the initial growth and development of the species to accumulated thermal units (growing degree days -GDD). For that purpose, experimental populations were sown six times in summer/autumn conditions (decreasing photoperiod) and six times in winter/spring condition (increasing photoperiod). Southern sandbur phenological evaluations were carried out, on alternate days, and total dry matter was measured when plants reached the flowering stage. All the growth and development fits were performed based on thermal units by assessing five base temperatures, as well as the absence of it. Southern sandbur development was best fit with Tb = 12 o C, with equation y = 0,0993x, where y is the scale of phenological stage and x is the GDD. On average, flowering was reached at 518 GDD. Southern sandbur phenology may be predicted by using mathematical models based on accumulated thermal units, adopting Tb = 12 o C. -This work was carried out with the objective of evaluating growth and development of sourgrass (Digitaris insularis) based on days or thermal units (growing degree days -GDD). Two independent trials were developed aiming to quantify the species' phenological development and total dry matter accumulation in increasing or decreasing photoperiod conditions. Plants were grown in 4 L plastic pots, filled with commercial substrate, adequately fertilized. In each trial, nine growth evaluations were carried out, with three replicates. Phenological development of sourgrass was correctly fit to time scale in days or GDD, through linear equation of first degree. Sourgrass has slow initial growth, followed by exponential dry matter accumulation, in increasing photoperiod condition. Maximum total dry matter was 75 and 6 g per plant for increasing and decreasing photoperiod conditions, respectively. -This work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the growth and development of honey weed (Leonurus sibiricus) based on days or thermal units (growing degree days). Thus, two independent trials were developed to quantify the phenological development and total dry mass accumulation in increasing or decreasing photoperiod conditions. Considering only one growing season, honey weed phenological development was perfectly fit to day scale or growing degree days, but with no equivalence between seasons, with the plants developing faster at increasing photoperiods, and flowering 100 days after seeding. Even day-time scale or thermal units were not able to estimate general honey weed phenology during the different seasons of the year. In any growing condition, honey weed plants were able to accumulate a total dry mass of over 50 g per plant. Dry mass accumulation was adequately fit to the growing degree days, with highlights to a base temperature of 10 o C. -This work was carried out with the objective of elaborating mathematical models to predict growth and development of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) based on days or accumulated thermal units (growing degree days). Thus, two independent trials were developed, the first with a decreasing photoperiod (March to July) and the second with an increasing photoperiod (August to November). O herbicida glyphosate é um defensivo agrícola de grande importância mundial. Neste sentido, diversos trabalhos têm sido desenvolvidos no intuito de selecionar adjuvantes que elevem a eficácia do produto. Dois experimentos foram realizados com o objetivo de avaliar a eficácia do herbicida glyphosate quando associado a diferentes protótipos experimentais de adjuvantes agrícolas, elaborados a partir de resíduos não-purificados da produção de biodiesel. Foi utilizado resíduo bruto da produção de biodiesel, bem como sua diluição em água, adição de sulfato de amônio, KOH e/ou óleo de soja. Avaliou-se o controle da corda-de-viola (Ipomoea triloba L.) em viveiro experimental, bem como a infestação de plantas daninhas em condição de campo. Em geral, a presença de protótipos de adjuvante na calda do herbicida glyphosate não resultou em incrementos de controle em nenhuma condição experimental, porém, também não prejudicou a eficácia do produto.

-Searching for renewable energy sources has motivated the development of biodiesel production units in Brazil. However, for biodiesel being considered fully sustainable, suitable destinations for its production waste should be found, especially for crude glycerin. Therefore, this work was developed to evaluate glyphosate herbicide efficacy on weed control when combined to different concentrations of non-purified residue of biodiesel production. Two experiments were carried out, one in an experimental plant nursery, using sourgrass (Digitaria insularis) as bioindicator, and another one in field condition, assessing the natural weed community. Adding biodiesel production waste to the spray mix solution has not increased glyphosate efficacy in controlling sourgrass. Furthermore, there was a reduction in glyphosate effectiveness after addition of waste to the spray mix solution at doses equal to or higher than 0.6% v/v. No results were found justifying the adoption of biodiesel production residue as an agricultural adjuvant. Positive points observed were minimal, with no consistency between species or application times, and glyphosate remains as the best application and recommendation option. Porém, para que o biodiesel seja considerado plenamente sustentável, deve-se encontrar destinos adequados para os resíduos de sua produção, com destaque para a glicerina bruta. Assim sendo, este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a eficácia do herbicida glyphosate no controle de plantas daninhas quando associado a diferentes concentrações de resíduo não purificados da produção de biodiesel. Dois experimentos foram realizados, um em viveiro experimental, utilizando o capim-amargoso (Digitaris insularis) como bioindicador; e outro em campo, avaliando a comunidade natural de plantas daninhas. A adição de resíduo da produção de biodiesel à calda de pulverização não elevou a eficácia do herbicida glyphosate no controle do capim-amargoso. Ainda, foi observada redução na eficácia do glyphosate após adição de resíduo à calda de pulverização em doses iguais ou superiores a 0,6% v/v. Não foram encontrados resultados que justifiquem a adoção de resíduo da produção de biodiesel como adjuvante agrícola. Os pontos positivos observados foram mínimos, sem consistência entre Rev. Bras. Herb., v.14, n.2, p.171-180, abr./jun. 2015 espécies ou momentos de aplicação, permanecendo o glyphosate puro como a melhor opção de aplicação e recomendação.

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a atividade relativa da catalase em extrato aquoso de losna-branca (Parthenium hysterophorus), bem como comparála à atividade da catalase de outras espécies daninhas. O trabalho constou de três fases, que envolveram a padronização do método, comparação da atividade relativa da catalase de plantas da família Asteraceae e comparação com outras 11 espécies daninhas, sendo estas: Euphorbia heterophylla, Alternanthera tenella, Cenchrus echinatus, Panicum maximum, Amaranthus viridis, Ipomoea hederifolia, Galinsoga parviflora, Bidens pilosa, Sonchus oleraceus, Cyperus rotundus e Commelina benghalensis. Observou-se resposta linear crescente da reação entre extrato aquoso de losna-branca e peróxido de hidrogênio, em razão da concentração do extrato vegetal. Em todas as fases, a atividade relativa da catalase de extrato de losna-branca foi superior à atividade da catalase das demais espécies daninhas. Com os dados obtidos nas três fases, conclui-se que a maior atividade relativa observada para a catalase da losnabranca contribui significativamente para a tolerância dessa espécie ao herbicida paraquat. Essa maior atividade pode ser consequência da maior concentração enzimática nas células ou devido à maior atividade intrínseca da enzima (afinidade enzima-substrato), havendo necessidade de estudos mais precisos para essa conclusão.
